Regarding the rumor on tdn:

Any toolarmy members get their dvd singles yet? If so, how are the packaging/commentary/remixes etc.

Good to see the forum up and running again by the way.

I haven't seen or heard anything.
haha I actually was really really happy to see this forum up and going again. Wonder why, I don't seem to recall any greater insights that generated from the discussions here.

yeah, toolarmy members ordered their copies last saturday. they've since been shipped out. both of the audio remixes are considerably long (schism about 20 minutes, parabola about 15 minutes,) and the schism audio commentary is done by david yow. jello biafra does the audio commentary for parabola.

i haven't received my copies yet, personally, but the general attitude so far is that the video quality is to die for, the audio commentaries are amusing, and the remixes aren't anything too special.

i have, however, received my signed copy of lateralus and framed it sealed. images of someone else's copy, opened (showing the signatures) can be found here: http://www.teleincision.com/tool/

also, the stickers on the front of the DVD singles state that we should look out for a new tool album in spring 2006.

-oh, and on the plastic that wraps the dvd's, there's a sticker on it that says 'New TOOL Album Spring 2006'. ( as stated above)

-the remixes aren't really that great. in my opinion, they're pretty boring. the parabola one takes about 7 or 8 minutes for it to actually begin (there's just maynard or someone else singing the same 3 notes prior). and the schism one is dull as well. they aren't really even remixes. it's hard to explain, but you'll see when you get them.

-for commentary. if you listen to parabola's commentary, its actually done twice over. there's one guy doing it, but there's two different tracks of it done over eachother. so it's pretty hard to follow. the schism, i believe, only has one. I haven't really checked that out yet.

-the video quality is very, very nice. clear as crystal.

-interesting to know that the covers for these dvd's that are floating around on amazon and even here, aren't the covers at all. they're the booklet covers. they're packaged like the NIN 'With Teeth' album (cardboard CD like, not the general DVD casing.). they're kinda cool. the menu's are bad ass. if you want/need more pics, let me know. i'll post them. peace.

Holy crap, me wantee. I went to my HMV after calling to see if they were selling them. I was assured they were, but then I got there and the dude I talked to on the phone said that they're in stock but nor for sale. So I'll have to wait like everyone else who doesn't have Hot Topic (I guess that's a good thing though). One time I was in the states and I got the think-man tee from a HT store, and as I was walking out some dude was like "Hey man...MAYNARD IS A GOD". I was like "aaaaalright!" sarcastically and I walked out.

That framing looks really good, in that you are displaying both the album cover and the album etc.

Can't wait for mine to come in the mail - it takes a little longer to reach Australia but hopefully it will be here soon... thanks for the framing/display idea!

I imagine they will be VERY rare in Australia. I can't see there being more than ten ending up down here. What do you think!

Well, there's roughly 300 million people in the U.S. and roughly 20 million people in Aus. so if they (Tool) only made 300 signed copies, I'd be very surprised if there were more than 20 or so copies in Australia by rough comparison... I think you're about right: maybe 10 to 15 copies?

I'm just really impressed so far with everyone's efforts to frame and display them as I'm sure they will increase in demand as time goes by.

Also, I like how the band have continued the idea of putting a 'reminder' on their products just before an album comes out. In early 2001, a friend bought a copy of Opiate which contained the ad for a "New Album" sometime in April - sure enough Lateralus came along shortly after... I'm excited!

A spiral. Although you'd be better off turning off all the lights in the room, cranking the subwoofer and just closing your eyes. The remix for Parabol(a) is really... Trippy.

Picked up the Schism single from hot topic, I'm pleased with it, cool artwork and menus, and the high quality video kills the one i had downloaded. The remix is very long, dark and ambient, and is an interesting reinterpretation of the song. Audio commentary is more of a joke than anything, but is funny and worth a listen although I was hoping for more of a serious commentary...

Overall, I was a bit worried about the idea of packaging a video single from three years ago, but actually this seems to be worth it and has, for me, revived interest in the song and the video and sort of given it new life for me. This doesn't quite strike me as something that was slapped together for commercial value, it's art and I look forward to picking up the Parabola single as well... still not sure why both weren't packaged together though...

If they sold them together they'd be about $20. Maybe $25. Somehow I don't think that's the case. And I seriously doubt Tool is going to pull in that much money from two single DVDs. Nice try, though. Hey, here's an idea! Stop listening to the band and looking at information about their upcoming release if you think they've sold out!

You seem to have a lot of success with Australia Post. I'm in Sydney too yet still haven't received my signed vinyl even though you got yours on Saturday!

Otherwise, I think the artwork on both dvd singles looks great. Some bands just release singles/videos in packages that have minimal artwork and are pretty boring etc. I also like the photos showing the makeup process... kinda cool.

after searching everywhere last night i decided to take a peak in Hot Topic and they had em! They had 1x parabola and 2x schism... So i got the last set!!! (but i feel bad for the tool fan that only gets the schism dvd and not the parabola one.....) Really enjoyed them, would have liked to see some more features or some easter eggs... but the commentary was cool, i think some of it hints to something... like at one part during the schisms commentary he says try rearranging the lyrics..first post since the fourms are back up, and must i say this.. but im happy to see toolnavy back up and running.

new tool spring 2006...... ya beyotches.!....

sorry for my multiple posts but i got something to add...

everyone knows the beginning of the schism video with the scale... well when me and my girlfriend were watching the dvds, she pointed out that there are old chinese characters on the scale. in the center is the character sensei (which means teacher)... then there are two more characters, one above and one below the sensei character... and even with her knowledge with the chinese language... she cant decipher those ones, probally because their old.

personally i think the whole sensei thing and the scale is to resemble something like .."teaching through balance" or something like that...

Here's the Schism commentary (found it on a Jesus Lizard newsgroup)....

Schism commentary (Left side):

Hi there and by that I mean hello. My name is David Yow. I used to be
one fourth of a music ordeal called the Jesus Lizard or as Tom Brokaw
might say Jesus Lizard and I'm here today to commiserate I mean
compensate on this goddamn tool video I feel like I should be honest
with you and let you know that the Stombolli I had for breakfast is
not doing me any favors but that's really neither (coughs) here nor
there, the important thing is we got this video what the, what is that
it smells like cat food and peanuts in a wet cardboard box oh man did
you guys see the Neville brothers on that last tour, check out that
guys head, wait is that the woman, that's the guy, the man or the
woman, well you know honest to god viewer listener this is the day of
androgyny, isn't it? Like you know boys would be girls, girls would be
boys. Now I know that's probably got you thinking about Henry Rollins
and Jello Biafra, hey Maynard could you get me a Tequila and Gatorade
please? nose zit zit, I swear to god I had a zit there, I'll get it to
come out, I tell you what man, I really wish David Cross was here
(laughs) that's most in the morning, well see the thing is I mean
honest to god there's no point in lying about this any longer, the
idea behind this rock music video is it's all about ears, later on I
think it should become clear to you exactly what the fuck I'm talking
about, it's also about sleeves and veins and um Cluss Kinsey. And ah
you know ah I recently meet a English guy named James Smith who looked
a lot like Cluss Kinsey and he told me a story about when he was
watching his television his VCR was broken so he was wondering what he
could do the rest of the evening and he found that left hand Henry was
playing with his chest hair so he went in the kitchen and got his
sithers and started cutting off his chest hair and he made little
animals like a dog and a rhinoceros and a snake and making a snake out
of chest hair is really pretty easy, I wanna make a stegosaurus,
that's a lot more difficult, but um (laughs) on this part where this
couple and they are married so don't worry about that, on this part
where there like doing that head shake looking thing, I invented that,
I feel like I should get credit for that, what was really happening in
actually fact was that she cant move like that, that's all done in
post-production, cuz people cant really do that, and it's see it's,
see this movie is all about ears, see and you know what I'm talking
about and also facial vaginas, ears and facial vaginas, ah which kind
of makes me think of Tracy Ullman, (laughs), doctor, help me! and ah
so I dunno shit about capillaries but ah I feel like I got to tell you
that this part which is, it's nice to have more color since monochrome
days are gone pal/pale, these days color's where it's at, ah as a
matter of fact here in, well were in Hollywood right now, ah, this
recording is happening at the policial, motherfucking Hollywood and
did you know the listen viewer that you know headshots actors use
these days there doing them in color, yeah, now this is claymation,
this was done by someone Sydney Portneay, because he did claymation
and ah, now that's just uncalled for pulling that shit out of that
guys neck, you know, why didn't, she didn't even ask like, hey you
want me to get that for you, no see he, and see that's careless, good
thing it didn't break and ah ok, here comes this guy, that's, no mom,
that's not sperm, and ah yeah so, hey Maynard could you get me a
Tequila and Gatorade please, thanks, thanks yeah, no, now, yeah, yeah
that's good, um, oh Danny your girlfriend called, ok, um, where's
Maynard, nah he's in the bathroom getting a Tequila and Gatorade, um,
yeah so I recall, I think man did you ever see that Devo video for ah
satisfaction, ah were the goofy sort of punk rock guy does the back
flip and lands on his back I though that was pretty good, and then
that part in um ah hot for teacher by Van Halen and recently I was in
target and (laughs) target and I saw this record section and I saw
that they had a Van Halen under H which I thought was impressive um
you probably recall that part in hot for teacher right when ah David
Lee Jones goes uhhh, probably one of the best little parts of any
movie I can recall um but you know ah there's no point in me dilly
doling any longer ah because ah that Stombollie's starting to take
effect and ah fortunately for you and me (laughs, hello by someone in
the background) the video has now drawn to a close.

Schism commentary (right side):

What?, Um, So yeah, I've been hired by Tool to come in and ah comment
on this, on this movie that you're enjoying and I was paid over 15,000
dollars to do it, ill do just about anything for a hundred bucks but
ah goddamnit it's over so I'm not going to tell you the rest of my
story, (coughs), that ah what you need to do there is sit back and ah
pay close motherfucking attention to what is going on there on your TV
screen that plasma 56'' thing that you got above your fireplace, that
ah that your mom bought for you, but ah, as you're watching this I
think that it's really important for you to ah to ah question what is
that you're looking at and um you know question that person sitting
next to you and why it is they're doing what they're doing, um but
more importantly, I mean, you know from a rock-music-video standpoint
you need to keep in mind that ah this kind of artistic stuff is, it
definitely (repeated) it's got a place um you know in the modern world
for to take up some space for us (cough) us being the viewer ah the
entertaine, if you will, and as you're asking these questions try not
to come up with answers immediately, like give yourself a few days
after having had a few days to mull it over and think about what it is
that you're looking at, I think it wouldn't be a bad idea to watch it
again, and ah (laughs) why did I get up, um, ok, alright, this is
their new place they just moved in like a couple weeks ago and they're
going well you wanna get some furniture and she's thinking like iquia
and he's going man fuck you I hate that iquia shit oh I don't know how
to put it together and the directions they give you they don't have
anything written, it's all like a diagrams with the pictures and they
give you those fucking album riches that break every time and she's
going yeah you're probably right and then they decide they go to this
antique shop and ah they just feel like going to this post modern sort
of apartment is really gonna, it's not gonna really match what's going
with some of these sort of Victorian these burrow wood, ah ok look
right, that's me, the flash there, that was me, ah dressed up like a
guy um this is the part I may have talked about this earlier when I
was talking about furniture shopping and being as how the guy in this
video is sweetish and he's used to being into furniture design and ah,
his name is Eric, and ah, he ah Eric, his name is Eric Swanson, and um
he ah, fuck me, he fucked me, and ah you know so we started this
relationship where ah he would design my furniture and ah I would kind
of redesign his ear and then in this part, ah actually that's my hand
over there pulling his ear to ah what we were trying to get across
here (laughs) is that you know ah you know life is a femoral ah and
derrick that means that doesn't last that, it doesn't last you know
temporary, and temporary means that it know doesn't last forever um
but the point that I'm trying to make is that ah generally rock music
videos are used for ah entertainment purposes this however is more of
a educational setup for ah , for people to ah, (sigh) learn with,
that's why, that's why that's why the band is called tool because this
is an education tool and a education tool and ah there's talk that you
know amongst the insiders that the planet mars is going to be changed
to ah, the names going to be changed to tool, which will be pretty
cool both four letters, there's no problem with that, but um, ah, and
he's afraid that he would have to change it to venus pool or ill ride
tonight and ah you know ever since lendo lost that thing ah he was not
much into rearranging lyrics, um, so, ah, um, ah ok this is the part
where the guy, this guy used to be in the army, and um he was kind of
dissatisfied with the ah, the ah, the work he was doing in the army,
ah, cuz he had gone off to fight a battle in a very important war,
that's nearly redone isn't it important war, I mean of course the
war's important, ah yeah, and ah, um, ah, hmm, well, drawn a blank
here, don't worry cant last forever, ah, poor little fellow, bounces
right back, um, (telephone ring) thank god, saved by the bell, hello,
hello, this is David Yow who's this? I'm sorry, Ryan hi how are you,
oh Daniels here if I could just talk to you for a minute because I'm
doing a voice-over for ah, one of their videos, yeah so what are you
wearing? Why you know what it's over now, alright bye-bye (laughs, hello?)

thank you rimb.

this is a tentative to transcribe parabola's ones... correct them if you want/can
[...] means missing.

[left channel]
are you sure you want me to do this?
i mean, as you know i sort of got to know you guys in tool before i really knew the music,
as if i know the music now, i mean it's something that grows on you after a while,
passed the point of wondering "come on, come, on when is this song gonna get to the point?".
it goes on over and over again and eventually [...] it grows on you.
as you well know i'm also somebody who's damn near alergic to mtv and i hardly watch music videos at all,
but at least you don't have tool standing up there looking like a bunch of dumbasses lip-syncing to the song.
[...] a maynard lip-syncing with no lyrics right about now might be really cool like some interpretative dance
with a, a little [...] circle screen behind them there.
ah, here we are...
tool central.
is this the stage set? or is this maynard's secret cave, where it all comes out?
down, a mile under the ground, into an old mine, somewhere in arizona, to hide for inspiration.
ooh. that's not maynard. who is that?
aah! it must be your management or your label!
aah, there we are...
here's the drugs... this will inspire you to make things we can sell.
this is interesting to me as somebody with music as unusual as tool's got as popular as tool is.
so in one of your own chat-rooms one said tool fans are even more obnoxious that grateful dead fans.
i didn't say that, but somebody who wrote you guys did.
ooh what, no hypodermic needles, no drugs?
or is this when you sign your contract, with zoom entertainment and blood?
and then, they reward you with.. an apple!
ooh this guy's figers, he's got to be a major label executive.
ooh he's gonna cut the apple.. like "you know what happens to you if you do not obey your label and your management?"
because then you start hallucinating, and every piece of fruit you cut open, will turn into a tool image.
what would the tool fans do if that guy came out on stage instead of maynard?
and he said "i've been through a lot, but it's good to be back."
aaah, there we are... so this is how it all gets done, in the inner sanctum of hollywood.
aaah, yes. so when you sign with one of these big labels it really is sad and [...stoned?...], isn't it?
[...] ring around the [...rosy?...]. a pocketful of weird hands, pulling out another tool logo.
i remember that [...] from [...]. that's not [...]. it's not marilyn manson either but it sort of looked like him for a minute.
in one of those videos where he's got his mouth pulled apart with his own devil instruments.
aah, flying rocks. aah, [...] hairdo!
i'm waiting for the time when the only way left for kids to shock their pierced and tatooed parents is to start doing things like that
to the back of their head, taking advantage of the low cost of plastic surgery especially in l.a. "hey mom, how do you like my new devil horns?"
get a tail, get a third leg...
a-ah! the tree of life or the tree of doom? reach and find out.
oh would i rather have [...] or a tail? i'd rather have a tail.
o-oh. oh, here we go again! that was like the reception area of a major label. yep, waiting to be seen.
bow down, get your eye-print. we have to know who you are. ooh, and there's the inside, uh. gorgeous.
this is a feel-good song, i take it.
aah, the old "[...] some ball in the air" trick.
aah. maybe that character-looking metal-tin man looking thing is actually the alien [...].
yap yap yap... do do do...
oh, no more path through the forest. aah. [...] look at the forest.
oh and now they're gonna bring it all together. the floating grapes. the alien [...] man. the artist.
oh-oh. you've been downsized!
you brought us [...] million selling acts and now that we're done with you you're fired and we take all the money!
oh, see i was mad.
ooh, now what's he doing. ooh that's cool. ooh i used to do that do dead fish on the shore of lake michigan in my grandma's house.
the [...] had a mass die-off. [...] with a stick and chase my sister down the beach with [...]. she didn't like that too much.
didn't wanna get hit and all of that.
that's a very well-done special effect [...] i must say. you don't quite get the same effect with computer-generated images, do you?
or is that what this is? hard to say. oh-oh. here come the grapes of doom again. what does it all mean?
wasn't for [...] to being down, right about now. something goes wrong and [...] t.j. hooker. that big ol' curly [...] after they're hand-cuffed.
great way to sanitize police mentality and fascism for a [...] adult united states.
aah, old fire eyes is back. aaah, religion. ah ah they something like [...spermize???...] that's cool.
a-ah. now it looks a little like that video from the academy of [...unarious?...] like uh showing how the space brothers were kinda come
save the world with a giant tesla coil.about three years ago, actually. but it didn't happen.
but.. very interesting call, their headquarters out in [...] california and they like visitors.
is this your brain on tool?
oh say, this is at least as spectacular as the... the cd artwork from lateralus.
aah, triumph at the end. [...] the fireworks fill the sky, and all is no blind. i feel soothed. [your brain on tool?]

[right channel.]
so, i got to know tool in kind of a round-about way, mainly through... ah - adam, who's close friend of king buzzo of the melvins,
so when the melvins myself were.. rehearsing songs for a couple of albums we made together, part way through the rehearsals adam
came in just wantin' to play around on a jam, and.. cool things came out and he said he wanted to be on the project and i.. i was very
happy to have him. i mean, some people from the punk-rythm valley-side of things were "what are you doing here hang out with people like tool"
but hey, they're my friends i mean i don't judge people the way some other people might think i would, and.. it was immediately obvious that
even guitar tone alone adam doesn't sound like anybody else. on the kind of ideas he was adding to our songs and even the old dead kennedy
songs we played live, they were really out of left field, so much as they're out of some weird field that i've never heard anybody do before,
so that was a very very great pleasure to work with adam, and get some of that unique voodoo with the rub-off on everybody was heard the biafra
with the melvins stuff so far, the... never breathe what you can't see and [...] cds.
so if anybody out there is curious about the... a [...] tool-punk hybrid check 'em out.

[...spermize???...] that's cool.

sperm eyes. they are eyes with flames coming off them giving the impression of bits of sperm. get it?
