View Full Version : Kurt Cobain?

Ok, I know this is going against what I said before but a few ideas have popped into my head.

He had alot to say.
He had alot of nothing to say.
We'll miss him.

(He certainly did have a lot to say
and some people would consider that the world is a far worse off place without him)

So long.
We wish you well.
You told us how you weren't afraid to die.
Well then, so long.
Don't cry.
Or feel too down.
Not all martyrs see divinity.
But at least you tried.

(Maybe this is talking about how Cobain's message hasn't got through to as many people as he wanted it to.)

Standing above the crowd,
He had a voice that was strong and loud.
We'll miss him.
Ranting and pointing his finger
At everything but his heart.
We'll miss him.

(Did Cobain write one love song?)

No way to recall
What it was that you had said to me,
Like I care at all.

(Maybe this refers to the actual time when Nivarana were popular and Maynard did go along with the crowd. Now that it's all over he doesn't wish to repeat it).

So loud.
You sure could yell.
You took a stand on every little thing
And so loud.

(They certainly did write a lot of protest songs and Kurt sure did make a lot of noise)

Standing above the crowd,
He had a voice so strong and loud and I
Swallowed his facade cuz I'm so
Eager to identify with
Someone above the ground,
Someone who seemed to feel the same,
Someone prepared to lead the way, with
Someone who would die for me.

(This bit may be about how Maynard went along with the crowd, thinking that he had found his leader and that he wasn't that diffrent from him)

Will you? Will you now?
Would you die for me?
Don't you fuckin lie.

(Slowly begining to reliease that Cobain was full of lies and wasn't a matyr for him, Btw, I love the way this bit comes off in the song, it's like Maynard has just considered something he has not thought of before and needs time to think out his logic)

Don't you step out of line.
Don't you fuckin lie.

(Cobain going too far?)

You've claimed all this time that you would die for me.
Why then are you so surprised to hear your own eulogy?

(Telling Cobain to fuck off because he knows he is lying)

You had alot to say.
You had alot of nothing to say.

(Taking joy in the fact that he has worked him out?)

Come down.
Get off your fuckin cross.
We need the fuckin space to nail the next fool martyr.

(He is often spoke of a martyr and maybe that's the image that soicety has given him. Maynard is saying that he was a prat for doing what he was doing.People would like to think of him as a martyr but even if he was then what did he martyr himself for? - himself? Certainly not his fans - see "rape me" - Hardly a martyr in that case then)

To ascend you must die.
You must be crucified
For your sins and your lies. [sic]
Goodbye...

I think the promblem is that everybody looks at the first sentence as the literal rising of Christ after his death. Certainly it works that way but it also has a metaphoical meaning. What if the ascending is because of the death. Cobain is looked as a God by many, many people because of his death due to his aparent self-belief in his lack of ablity to be true to himself (the ulimate ego death - when one cannot be true to themsleves). The following of him has turned him into a God and people believe his lies.

Just my view though

HA HA HA! Was it me who gave birth to this beast?

Very good insight into the lyrics. If Maynard did write this song on Kurt Cobain, then he's spot on.

maybe it's about darth vadar and obi wan kenobi.

He had alot to say.
He had alot of nothing to say.
We'll miss him.

(obi wan taught darth vader well)

So long.
We wish you well.
You told us how you weren't afraid to die.
Well then, so long.
Don't cry.
Or feel too down.
Not all martyrs see divinity.
But at least you tried.

(obi wan said that if darth struck him down, he would become more powerful than imaginable. obi wan didn't see "divinity" because the dark side clouds the force.)

Standing above the crowd,
He had a voice that was strong and loud.
We'll miss him.
Ranting and pointing his finger
At everything but his heart.
We'll miss him.

(he was always lecturing anakin. not pointing at his heart = not explaining why anakin needs to work harder and not revealing himself or his reasons to anakin.)

No way to recall
What it was that you had said to me,
Like I care at all.

(anakin didn't always follow direction. he lost his light saber a lot just didn't remember what he was taught. his jedi/teen angst is reflected in "like i care at all.")

So loud.
You sure could yell.
You took a stand on every little thing
And so loud.

(obi wan was relentless in his mentorship.)

Standing above the crowd,
He had a voice so strong and loud and I
Swallowed his facade cuz I'm so
Eager to identify with
Someone above the ground,
Someone who seemed to feel the same,
Someone prepared to lead the way, with
Someone who would die for me.

(anakin clearly looked up to the leader of the dark side... palpatine. he wanted to be like him because palpatine seemed to konw what to do and related to anakin in many respects.)

Will you? Will you now?
Would you die for me?
Don't you fuckin lie.

(anakin doesn't trust obi wan anymore and questions the level of loyalty he should have toward him.)

Don't you step out of line.
Don't you fuckin lie.

(he's bought in to the dark side. he doesn't believe in the good side/jedi any more.)

You've claimed all this time that you would die for me.
Why then are you so surprised when you hear your own eulogy?

(obi wan's decision to let darth vadar kill him was impromptu. he knew he would die by vadar, but didn't know how or when. he thought darth would kill him with skill, but during the last fight, he realized that he was still better than vadar so he had to intentionally die vadar's light saber in order to lose to him.)

You had alot to say.
You had alot of nothing to say.

(darth vadar struggling with the notion that he killed his mentor.)

Come down.
Get off your fuckin cross.
We need the fuckin space to nail the next fool martyr.

(the events set in motion for vader to be the next martyr when killed by luke.)

To ascend you must die.
You must be crucified
For your sins and your lies. [sic]
Goodbye...

Alex99 - I totally agree, it is strongly possible for it to be about Kurt. He definitely had a lot of nothing to say.

This song could be applied to an infinite number of people for an equal number of reasons, and that's how the band wants it to be. Just like "Hooker with a Penis".

Here is what Maynard had to say about this very question:

Is [Eulogy] about Kurt Cobain? I wouldn't think you'd be a fan of his.
"I appreciate what he did. I'm not really happy with his professional
widow. The song's about tendencies, not about a specific individual.
It's about tendencies of people wanting to stand on a soap box and
sacrifice themselves in some way. We don't need that process anymore.
You're on your own now."

I dug that up at the following URL:

Wow, well that article was great, but it was a real buzz kill, too. He pretty much explained half of the album. I'll never post again.

Kurt Kobain?

No its about Duncan from Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, starring Kevin Costner.

"You told me you weren't afraid to die"

Duncan's eyes were poked out,he looked death in the face.

"You said you would die for me"

When trouble comes Duncan tells Robin Hood to go on without himfor it would be easier for him to escape alone.

"Don't cry"

Irony, Duncan had no eyes.

"Don't you fucking lie"

This is about the bit where Robin Hood is told by Duncan how his father died, Robin Hood doesn't want to believe it.

"Come down, get off your fucking cross"

Robin Hood is asking Jesus to come back and heal Duncan's blindness.

"Goodbye"

Duncan dies in the end.

On a serious note though, errr, its about Bill Hicks. He was the one who wanted to save us and be the matyr, Kobain didn't want anything to do with us.

Why would Tool sing so negatively about someone they love?

It's not to be taken fundamentally, that could symbolise a thousand things if it was about Bill Hicks, it doesn't have to be taken literally, it could be a third person perspective for example.

I read all these posts. Once in a while I come to one that amazes me and surprises me because it's exactly what i am thinking. Then i read some posts that just PISS ME OFF!! How could this song be about nirvana's lead singer? Yeah we all know that in order to understand Maynard's lyrics we must read between the lines, but where would you get Kurt Cobain from in these lyrics? This song is about Jesus Christ. Whether he lived or not, that is not the point. It's mostly directed towards Christianity. It's telling all Christians to open their eyes! Question what you believe!

This song is clearly about the demise of Michael Jordan.

It is not, in any way, about Kurt Cobain. Maynard is intelligent enough to understand the true depth and complexities of Kurt's satire. He wouldn't sing a pissed of song about how Kurt "lied". There is no logic in the flowing. Anyone with a basic knowledge of Kurt Cobain knows that Kurt was disgusted by Teen Spirit, especially because the song spoke out against those who elevated it so highly.
