I hope you're right but maybe we are reading too much into this. Maybe someone will make something out of the caption that has the words 'track' and 'release' and look at all the different coloured nobs and come up with an album title, track list, album length, lead single, album theme, lyrics and first tour date etc. Or it could simply be just a photo... that's my guess.
I hope January 17th is the release date...
Don't get the Osama thing though...?

Logistically, January 17th, 2006, makes sense in terms of a release date for a few reasons. First of all, it's a Tuesday as someone has mentioned before, it's after the Xmas period and if Tool are going to play at the Big Day Out in NZ and Australia (God please let it be true!), then the first show is in Auckland, NZ on Friday January 20th. Although it's only a few days, surely it would be nice to have your new album out before you played at such a festival, rather than get on stage and say "Oh yeah, by the way, we've got a new album coming out soon etc..."
Anyway, whether it's through Blair and his always-informing(?) newsletter or the BDO first announcement on Oct 5th, we should know more very soon...

Maybe it`s a mindfuck for the fans but 17-1-06 are special buttons, the 06 button has the little white thing removed.
darn, a picture with buttons and a whole bunch of people go wild, the Tool-Team must be having a good time I guess.
It's missing an 11 also. It would really seem it's deliberate, but that doesn't mean it's what we think. Maybe number one is 17:06 minutes....

I can ask myself that all day and I will never get an educated answer.
The 3 nob is pointing to the 4 nob and the 5 is pointing to 18 which means ....
so i'd say 7th May 2018

Anybody who's read the Rennes-le-Chateau article on Danny's site knows that 117 or, january 17th holds special occult significance. I believe Maynard and Blair once had a sort of contest to see if Maynard could add a 117 reference to a recording, which ended up with him coughing barely audible at 1:17 into an A Perfect Circle song, can't remember which one. But err...dig in to this and you'll find that Tool has a special thing for January 17th.

Lateralus was suppossed to be released 4/17/01 - MJK's birthday, but then the album got pushed back and was released in may....
so they have tried to release a cd on the 17th before, but to no avail

well...if you look at the bottom row of dials, you will see that "6" is the only number with an "0" in front of it, so that is definitely an "06" as far as that being a release date, that's very possible and pretty obvious, most of us had a feeling it would be released next year.
also, in the sea of red dials, there is a lonley blue one, which is numbered 17

I am going to go out on an amputated limb and use the DEVO reference too. Devo is scheduled to play Jan 13-15 at the Canyon Club in California. So, the 06 refers to 2006 and the 17th is the Tuesday after Devo plays those shows. I'm not saying that they will play with Devo (?), but the time reference is there. January 16th is MLK Day. Just some food for thought.

maybe if someone knew what piece of equipment that is, and took a look at the numbers on the board, to see if thats the way they are. and then compare that to the photo, to see if those numbers were altered on purpose, to release info for us all to lose our minds to.
by the way, maynard called and told me the album is self titled!

I believe that the picture is a clear message of contradicting and analysing the semantics found in the everyday life, while exaggeratedly trying to counterpoint the surrealism of the underlying metaphor of the humanity of the Vogonity, which contrives through the medium of the button structure to sublimate this, transcend that, and come to terms with the fundamental dichotomies of the other, and one is left with a profound and vivid insight into not only Mjk son's name, BUT ALSO THE TRUE RELEASE DATE OF THE ALBUM!!!!

how are the 1, 17, and 6 "evidently on display"? i see a 2, a 6, a 10, and a shitload of other numbers that are the same size as the 11, 17, and 6, so does that make them "evidently on display" as well?

Man, there are SEVERAL interpretations of this photo. lac says they're evident because the 1 is missing in first row(or the 11 knob has "become" a 1), the 17 is the only blue knob in second row, and 06 knob is obviously messed with.
IMO, I think the photo is just a fun way to stimulate your noggin' and help bide the time for the impatient...

A note on the Sharpies:
Red is the title of a King Crimson album, Red is the color of Valentine's Day (TUES Feb 14th, 2006, maybe maybe) and red and green are each other's complimentary colors. If the complimentary colors is what they were going for, I'm pretty sure that represents a double album where the two discs play off each other. I think I remember someone saying something about the vocals on the album and that potentially Maynard could sing it in a way where playing the two discs at once would create new lyrics or something. So if that's true, there's the complimentary thing.
Red = stop, green=go. Red and green are also the colors involved in colorblindness.
This is all brainstorming so hopefully someone else can pick something out of my rantings. I'm not actually set on any of these dates but this is a fun way to pass the time.

So, if you look at that picture, do you notice that on the very bottom row, the 6th knob is labelled 06, instead of just 6? and also, 3, 9, and 10 are muted.
So far, that gives us 1, 17, and 06.
1, because it should be 11, 17 because it's blue and not red, and 06 because it should just be 6.
I'm pretty damn sure that's the release date.
