well hopefully there will be a new single on the radio in the weeks to come, but would you want to hear it? personally, i would like to wait until i purchase the album and listen to it in its entirety w/o hearing any of the songs beforehand. so what do you guys think, will you be able to hold off or does it not matter?

I agree, I don't want to hear the single before I have the new album in my hands. I don't want any song on that new album to get overplayed for me. And plus, it's essentially a complete work as an album, so I'll wait to listen to it in its true form.

But I can guarantee I'd download it in a heartbeat if it leaked. What I'm saying here is like what those kids who can't get laid say about saving themselves for marriage.

In August's newsletter, Blair mentions to us that he walked in on the radio single as it was being perfected.

***A couple of weeks ago I went back to the studio after getting a call from Adam asking if I wanted to look at some photos he'd taken. When I arrived (with Rynne and the Lady in waiting female BMB), the guys were in the big room recording what undoubtedly (to me, at least) will be the 'radio' song. After sitting by the mixing console for over an hour, listening to take after take* (and with only a single beer in the fridge [sorry, Masa, was that yours?]), it didn't look like I was going to get a chance to check out the photos. After Justin commented that "the big room doesn't feel that big right now", the guys took a break so that Danny could listen to some things. It was now after hours (about 1:00 AM) but I finally had a chance to scroll through the photos on Adam's computer. After doing so, I went home. I assume that they eventually knocked out ** , getting it closer (the drums, that is) to way that it will one day sound like on KROC.***

--from August Newsletter

What does the ** mean? I guess it is the title to the single. Two letters?
Two numbers? I don't believe he is talking about the L.K. one from before, since that one supposedly is 15-18 mins long.

Any Thoughts?

I hope the single is the longest song on the album, uncut.

Well, the record company has just as big of a say in the single of the album as the band, and I doubt they would allow such a long song to be a lead single. Yes, I know about Lateralus being played on the radio and such, but remember that Schism was the lead single, and the only reason it wasn't edited down was that it wasn't a song where there was really any parts you could clip out easily without making it seen obvious. (Even the quiet part with the wah-wah solo has a certain continunity that would make it hard to do so)

However, a single is more of a record label and radio thing than anything else (a given of course) and there would be no way any record label that wants to go out and make a ton of money (AKA: every record label, even the indie ones. I'll pause a moment for your shock) wouldn't let the longest song go on the radio. Even if it is cut.

Think of D/R/T as on the radio. It wouldn't work would it now?

I know it was probably sarcasm, but I was bored so I figure why the hell not.

WAAF here in the Boston area played the entire Lateralus (not all at once mind you) album on air the weekend before it was released. I'm hoping they do the same thing with the new one. Schism was released to radio stations 3 or 4 weeks before Lateralus came out. Lateralus was given to radio stations unedited with permission for them to edit as they wanted, the record label had no say in what was cut.

What does this all mean? Expect the single to be released up to a month before the album comes out, if you have a Real rock station in your area that gets the entire album instead of just the single, you might hear each song before the album comes out, and the record label doesn't really have all that much control over Tool's music.

what happens when you are at a restaurant or a store or something, and it comes on and you can't stop yourself from listening? Or what if you have the radio on and the song comes on and you try to turn the radio off but both the volume knob and the power button magically broke... and the power chord was completly seized up and you couldn't get it out of the wall... and the tuning knob broke so you can't change the station, and the seek buttons broke tooo....

and you gota locked in the room that you are in so you are forced to listen, and there is no window to jump out of and no pillows or earplugs or anything to block the sound... you can't even use your fingers because they are in your poccketd and your pockets have superglue in them...

I guess if that happens, you're gonna have to listen to the single...

call me crazy. but i thought maynard said something about not having a single for this album. Something about not trying to cut the song down (time-wise). If no one else knows what im talking about im probably wrong. Im probably wrong anyway.

I don't want a single. That would be good.

If they had to cut it for time, then that means their most radio-friendly song should be a long, methodical, melodic song like Lateralus, or Reflection.

Sweet.

what happens when you are at a restaurant or a store or something, and it comes on and you can't stop yourself from listening? Or what if you have the radio on and the song comes on and you try to turn the radio off but both the volume knob and the power button magically broke... and the power chord was completly seized up and you couldn't get it out of the wall... and the tuning knob broke so you can't change the station, and the seek buttons broke tooo....

and you gota locked in the room that you are in so you are forced to listen, and there is no window to jump out of and no pillows or earplugs or anything to block the sound... you can't even use your fingers because they are in your poccketd and your pockets have superglue in them...

I guess if that happens, you're gonna have to listen to the single...

i dont know of many restaurants with tool playing the background. at least the local olive garden here doesn't anyway. it could be a regional thing i guess.

im waiting for the whole album. i dont listen to the radio, and im not gonna read about the cd beforehand.

If they release a single on CD before the album comes out...I'm going to buy it. In hopes that it will piss some of you off.

Scroll to the bottom.

On a side note, I like the fact that the discography is hosted on assmagic.com.

Not the DVD, silly. That's not out yet.

Go to the Images section in TDN, then Album, and scroll to "Schism Promo Single."

I prefer to listen to the whole album instead of just one song.
Personally, i won't have the problem of listening to the new single in the radio, since i'm in portugal and Tool isn't a band that has a big reputation around here (the new hit in this country is D'ZRT, try to search for it in the google, it's a portuguese pop band which first single is a mixed beat of a song of Machine Head, it's fucking sick actually...)

Apart from a 1 hour daily broadcast, we don't get to listen to Tool in Portuguese radio stations... And even in that broadcast they only play the hot new stuff...
And about Dzrt, that band makes me feel ashamed of my country...
