The question is why do HMV keep setting release dates when they obviously don't have a clue? Are they going by rumor or have the got preliminary release dates?

HMV: so when's the new album coming out
Tool's marketing agent: we don't know just yet. a release hasn't been set.
H:No, really tell me
T: I don't know!
H:you can tell me...
T: *hangs up*
H:*calls back 100 times, finally getting a response on try #101*
T:alright, you want a fucking date? *thinks of random date* September 19th. Now go tell everyone that, douchebag, and stop fucking calling me.
T:*hangs up*
H: sweet!

^that's what happened.

*phone rings*

Maynard : Hello?

HMV : Hey Maynard, it's Trent, what is up my ******?

Maynard : Just having a circle jerk with Blair and Danny.

HMV : Word, listen, I need to know the release date for the new album.

Maynard : Sure thing Trent, it's being released on the 19th of September!

HMV : Really?

Maynard : Would I lie to you Trent?

HMV : Ermm, of course you wouldn't Maynard.

Maynard : Ok, bye now Trent

HMV : Bye Maynard!

*both hang up*

*HMV guy chuckles to himself as he updates the website with the new date*

*Maynard and Adam burst into laughter while playing darts with Trents face on the dart board*

Didn't sites post dates of Teleincision being released today yet there was nothing out of it? Definitely have to wait for it to come up on Toolband IMO.

why? toolband.com is the offical tool site and probably the home of most of the bullshit rumours about the new album, toolabnd.com is the last source we should trust hehe.

All information regarding release dates to the catalogue are obtained from the relevant suppliers, please note that release dates are subject to change without prior notice.

Yes. The date got changed. It's gonna happen a hell of a lot more, because there is no release date. Get used to it. They didn't replace a shit date with a real one, they replaced a shit date with a shit date. Although I'm fully expecting another thread on the 19th, expressing the disbelief of a person who just doesn't understand that anything said by a person that's not in tool, or isn't blair, is fucking worthless.

wot is the time frame that record companies have to tell the stores about the release date?

Before the release date probably. Or they could just not tell at all and one night rush into the store and start selling cds.

I would GUESS something as low as like two weeks probably.

I bet its more than two weeks. The record company needs to sell the record. Not that I think the new album will have trouble selling (400-500k first week wouldn't surprise me), the company still has to do it, especially for a band that hasn't released an album in over 5 years.

Like NIN's new one. The release date and tracklist was announced 2 months before release to help promote it (since it had been 6 years since the last NIN one).

I think Tool will try to keep it a secret as long as possible (to make it more exciting and to avoid a really early internet leak that sometimes happens these days). I'm guessing 4-6 weeks before the release, we will know all the info.

That does sound logical. It's gonna leak though, especially if they announce it two months ahead of time. I'm guessing we will know about a month before, and since I predicted Oct. 25th, I'd bet we have another month to wait before we hear anything on a release date.

An internet leak is inevitable. CD companies press and package the cds about a week before release and start hauling them around the country for release. If you kickass at keeping things under lockdown, it will prolly leak on the Thursday before the tuesday release day (which really is not bad at all, considering some are 2 or 3 months ahead).

I really don't think Tool albums have become ones that people download to see if they will buy it or not. You will still have some people who just dont wanna support a band and buy it, but most people know how hard Tool works on these and how much they actually care about releasing a quality product, and how they have yet to make a mediocre album. I trust that the album will be good (I'm afraid that nothing can top lateralus though, so it can only go downhill; but if albums can get better, Tool will find a way) and will buy it before listening.

I'm definitely gonna buy it. I'm gonna try my best not to have expectations that limit me from enjoying it. Undertow to Ænima then to Lateralus were different enough that I'm actually almost thinking this will be better than Lateralus. However, if there really are Meshuggah influences in the new album, I'm not so sure it will top Lateralus.

One thing I don't understand is: Why do people think that announcing a tracklist (or anything) will somehow enable the leaking? The leak is going to happen but it wont leak if people who are ready to put it on internet dont get their hands on it. So, what announcing a tracklist or release date has to do with this?

Announcing the tracklisting won't enable the leak, but if they are done with the album and the record company takes three months to release it, it will be leaked. They probably won't announce a release date until it's done though, which would open the door for people to try and snatch it to leak it.
