you may not!

I believe that this song is about someone speaking for maynard and he just doesn't like it very much so he enters into the point of view of this other person and mocks the shit out of them.

you don't judge! you can't speak! you can't leave! you can't hurt me!

"well I do believe that somebody's got an ego problem!" - says maynard

I know you best, better than anyone... i know you better than i know myself...

(almost like the person from whom's POV we are hearing is putting a finger over maynard's mouth saying "shhh....i'll speak for you")

"you should shut the fuck up. you've obviously got a shit load of stupidity in that head of yours blinding you like your mitote if you think that you're so high and mighty and have yourself so figured out that you can come on in and fuck around with my life" - explains maynard.

it's time for you to make a sacrifice. it's time to die a little. give it up! you are a part of me!

-this sounds like maynard saying, "it sounds to me like what you want me to do is give up my own personal freedom of thought so that you can pretend like you know me well enough to think for me, and get no guff from me to make it easy."

anyhow... i hope that garbage makes sense.

"you can't leave out"......"you are a part of me"......a part of Maynard

I think I know what's confusing people. The part when he says "I know you better than I know myself." Cause it confused me a little at first. I figured that if he knew "you" better than he knew himself that the "you" couldn't be part of him. That it was outside of him, as in another person. But then I realized this thinking was skewed. He can know a part of himself better than he knows his "whole" self. He can know this part better than he knows who he really is/his potential/etc.
To me, this song is the basis for all other Tool songs. This "part" is reflected on every album, and most every song. To understand this part, is to understand Maynard's message.

I think that it is sung from the perspective of Maynard's alter-ego... form a higher form of his personality.

"you don't judge. you can't speak. you can't leave. you can't hurt me."

I believe that his superconscious takes the form of this alternate personality. If this personality is his superconscious that he is connected to, then Maynard is just the body through which it communicates. He doesn't judge... it comes natural to him, so he shouldn't feel like he judges intentionally. He can't speak for himself, maybe he felt like his words were spoken through him. He can't leave his own body... the only way would be death. He can't hurt the guiding consciousness in his head if there is a certain divinity that he believes in.

"it's time to die a little, give it up!"

To me this means that maybe he feels like he takes risks because of his intuition, and before these risks he cannot decide whether the risks are worth the consequences i.e. drug use. Consequences of enlightenment. Maybe he experimented with other forms of enlightenment as well, basically doing very unhealthy things to his state of mind to dig out some hidden memories.

Remember, just because these song's were written at this time, it doesn't mean that Tool or Maynard didn't belive certain things that they convey on the later albums. "We are eternal, all this pain is an illusion.." and yada yada yada

SpiralOut34

Well no, it wouldn't have been in that one. It'd be in the abridged series. I swear, it says that somewhere. Looking up...

When he transforms into Yami, he says, "BY THE POWER OF GREYSKULL!!!" and then a little later, "MINDCRUSH!! IN STEREO!!"

....in short, I was correct in both questions. Buahaha.

Doodz, this song is totally about a jigsaw puzzle. You guys didn't know that?

"I know you well, You are a part of me, I know you better than I know myself"

Seriously, you spend that much time working on those things, you know every corner of that image.

"the time has come to make a sacrifice, its time to die a little, give it up"

This is clearly about those times when you get the whole thing done and you realize you have a missing piece and your all like "WHERE THE FUCK!?" checking under tables and in the dog's poop.

... thought this was a pretty straight-forward song, but guess i was wrong!

edits: And Schism is the sequel track "I KNOW THE PIECES FIT!", the Nard is a puzzle fanatic. Get on board losers!
