Ok. This place has been a little messed up with all the roumors floating around regarding the new CD and/or DVD, so to try to clear things up here's a chronology of all the official information we've had to date:

2002/11/24 - Last show of the Lateralus tour. The last six have been taped for a DVD release (Source: tdn (http://toolshed.down.net/news/oldnews/old02.html)).
2002/11/28 - The band has started working on new material, even managing to work out the arrangement on at least one song (Source: toolband (http://www.toolband.com/news/main.php?showNews=past)).
2004/2/5 - While on tour with A Perfect Circle, Maynard says on an interview with Kerrang Magazine that they're working on a new Tool record (Source: tdn (http://toolshed.down.net/news/oldnews/old02.html)).
2004/4/7 - Danny says that he's been jamming for months with Adam and Justin and there's already a framework for 10 to 12 new songs, though they don't want to solidify anything too much until Maynard gets involved. He described the material as heavier and less intricate than Lateralus. He also says that he hopes the new album to be released on early 2005, and the DVD, which "won't be just another band-playing-live video", on summer 2004 (Source: mtv (http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1486242/20040407/story.jhtml)).
2004/12/14 - Blair describes a writing/arranging session (now with Maynard) and two new songs. One is a 15-18 minutes long song codenamed L. K. it "pretty much summed things up about the direction the new record was headed musically ... with its combination of odd time signatures, dynamics and intricacy of guitar work ... the acoustic drums were combined with lots of electronic samples of dissonant clocks, warped timpani, eruptions of noise and explosions of what sounded like bizarre artillery ... Adam seemed to be using the pedals more often ... Justin, with his lightning fast bass lines, at times there were riffs that seemed almost unnatural for that instrument ... it was the most impressive piece I’ve heard them do." Anyway, they said it wasn't finished yet, and it still had no vocals. The other song still has no title, it's a rhythmically complex 10 minutes long song and Danny had earlier described it as being his favorite Tool composition to date (Source: toolband (http://www.toolband.com/news/main.php?showNews=past)).
2005/1/13 - On January 6th, Tool has resumed after the holydays the writing/arranging for the next record. Adam has a new minimoog, and Maynard have been experimenting with some electronic vocal effects on Danny’s Sennheiser VSM-201 (Source: toolband (http://www.toolband.com/news/main.php?showNews=past)).
2005/2 - Acording to Blair, "the recording sessions are going very well, although it's still too early in the process for there to be a specific release date. Ditto with the live DVD, which isn't finished being edited yet, and which probably won't be released until after the new CD, perhaps in tandem with some other goodies that have been in the works for a while" (Source: toolband (http://www.toolband.com/news/letter/2005_02.php)).
2005/2/14 - Blair mentions that Tool have finished another song, and that they have a self-imposed deadline for finishing material for the new record (Source: toolband (http://www.toolband.com/news/main.php?showNews=past)).
2005/6/3 - Blair mentions that the band was yesterday "assembling/recording a rather monstrous piece of music" (Source: toolband (http://www.toolband.com/news/main.php?showNews=past)).
2005/7/7 - Blair afirms that any details about to the recording process as well as any projected time-tables, will be posted on the band’s official website, which "could be tomorrow, or two days from now, or in a couple of weeks or even a month from now" (Source: toolband (http://www.toolband.com/news/main.php?showNews=past)).
2005/7/11 - Lateralus vinyl is anounced for release on August 23rd (Source: tdn (http://toolshed.down.net/news/index.html)).
2005/7/17 - The band is in the recording process working with a guy named Joe (Source: toolband (http://www.toolband.com/news/index.html)).
2005/7/21 - Danny Carey will play with Pigmy Love Circus on August 6th, and "he’ll probably be coming directly from the studio with just a pair of sticks, and playing someone else’s drums" (Source: toolband (http://www.toolband.com/news/index.html)).
2005/8/14 - Adam has been posting photos from the recording process on My Space. The photos confirm the presence of producer/engineer Joe Barresi (Melvins, Queens of the Stone Age, Tomahawk, etc.) (Source: Adam’s My Space (http://blog.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.ListAll&friendID=20913840&Mytoken=20050824135159ML)).
2005/8/26 - More photos can be found on august newsletter (Source: toolband (http://www.toolband.com/news/letter/2005_08.php)).

So, that is until now. I probably forgot some things, so please post them, but let's try to keep this thread off of un-oficially-founded rumors

I'd like to add some info that I picked up from an interview with Danny Carey a few months ago, from cacavolante.org, if my memory doesn't betray me.
He stated that the wrtiting process of the new album had been influenced heavily by Fantômas and swedish band Meshuggah.
One can only hope for the complex brutality combined with the sensitivity of Maynard James Keenan's voice is a thread they haven't forgotten.

"- Well, the TA chat happened, but not without some problems. There was an astounding number of people in attendence, ultimately filling the chat rooms with garbage questions and flaming. There is, however, some news that came from it. Danny announced that they will not be releasing a double album and that the new record will be out in early '06 (January), and hinted that the DVD may be out before that. Adam said that the pre-production of the new album's artwork is happening now. Also Alex Grey will be involved with the artwork on the new cd (im thinking dvd), and that a tour with ISIS is a distinct possibility. Last, but certainly not least, the signed Lateralus vinyl will cost TA members $100. (Remember, its an investment!) Thanks to Lachrymotion for filling me in! -EyeChakra"

I think engineering is like...in charge of getting the unmixed tracks sounding good...Then mixer does the leveling...then producer masters it and does meticulous tweaks...something like that.

Here are some comments from Danny in late December (2 months old):

"All I can say is you should probably just look at the past TOOL records," he said. "It's just kind of the next stage of development. Some of the tunes are pretty heavy on this one. It's still gonna be weird time signatures and all that stuff. It's just what comes out of us, you know. We just try to be true to our chemistry when we're in the little room in here together jamming, and what comes out comes out."

I reckon the album title and tracklist are still unknown and will be released to the public a week or so prior to the album's release, anything prior to the few weeks before this release is just BS, even if it's on a foreign site, especially, if it's on a foreign site!

A week before is too late, if they want to promote this album it needs a title. I'm sure they could give the tracklisting about a week before but in March I'm certain we'll all know the title.

True, but Lateralus gained a huge momentum of it's sales through the first week which inspired even more hype. If they know the album title in March why wouldn't they tell us? Or at least in April, one week before would be absurd.

Just heard it on a portuguese radio,Antena 3 : Antonio Freitas,a reporter who's been in Amsterdam for the media (double) listening of the record described it as 'typical TOOL' and 'a worthy brother of Lateralus'.
It was a very short report, lacking details but it's been announced a further developed report on the subject during the day on the same radio.
Still Tool refuse to give out the record name or it's official release date...as well as the total number of tracks!According to Freitas, there must be 8 or 9 songs (pretty long ones).
Maynard said their european tour will be starting in Lisbon on May the 27th (yes,my prayers were answered!!!! :))) ) at Super Bock Festival. After saying that,Maynard supposedly tried to act like that info shouldn't have slipped out...but there it is.

As soon as there's an available link on Antena 3's website on this I'll post it around here.
So,besides the Portuguese Gig,nothing really new has come out.But for what i heard, some credit must be given to Andy King's review...the description of the Amsterdam's media rendez-vous sounded a lot like the one described by King.

LONDON LISTENING SESSIONS

From Andy King, TotalRock… New Album playback at 10, Golborne Road, London W10 -
February 20th 2006... 4pm and 7.30pm

There is something delightfully Toolian about staging a series of European album
press/radio playback and ‘meet-the-new-Record-Company’ dates whilst not only not revealing the name of said new album but also keeping all the track titles
themselves firmly under wraps.

It’s a joy – in this day and age and with such a multi-million selling global
mega-band (yes, it really is true, fans!) – to immediately bump into ¾ of the
band casually swigging beer from bottles (or, somewhat surprisingly, Starbucks
from a paper cup in Maynard’s case) and chatting amiably with the assembled
mid-afternoon gathering of hacks. It’s always a joy to meet a man so much ‘his
own man’ and Maynard, as usual, manages to take such an expression to dizzy new heights. As inscrutable as the bastard offspring of Chairman Mao and Wallace & Gromit’s Were Rabbit (slightly caught in the headlights of my immediate and presumptuous ‘hail fellow well met’ self-introduction) Maynard professes to
‘feeling a little jet-lagged’ and at once hops off to safer environs. Meanwhile
big haired Danny and Justin look, for all the world, like a brace of goddamn
hippies from the Bong Shop down the road. As has been revealed – Adam has
remained in LA ‘directing the video’.

After a 30 minute delay in proceedings – caused by a tardy and self-important
bunch of hacks creeping out of some rank corner of the evil EMAP Empire (they’re
all Borgs, we suspect) the Anonymous Playback of The Nameless Songs commences…‘probably nearly in their Final Running Order’, we are told. Readers will, hopefully, forgive any inaccuracies in reportage. On first listen I surmised
this was an 9 track album, managing to squeeze this figure up to 10 on second
hearing, whilst having confirmation from the band that it was, in fact an 11
track album. (They thought).

Track 1 (7min 3sec). Mesmeric start. Hypnotic beat. Jagged, angular off beats.
Familiar trancey passages punctuated by a guitar part reminiscent of an older
Tool track. Tribal drum beats f@!# with a lovely melody and climax with
Maynard’s vocals. I am going to cry.

Track 2 (7min 12sec) Melodic intro with almost balladic vocals from Maynard.
Lighter feel (almost, dare I say it, APC-tinged) but not for long. Danny gets
stronger – Baresi releases our tubthumper and the feel gets much heavier into
‘chugga chugga’ off beats. Then – here’s some unusual guitar work. Man, it’s
almost Hendix-like! Then back into a heavy tribal groove. I fight off the urge
to masturbate furiously.

Track 3/4 (This is either one 17 minute monster or two tracks – of 6min 20sec
and 10min 26sec – only the Gods Of The Stinfist know the answer). Whichever it
is – DO NOT SMOKE THE WEED WHILST LISTENING TO IT! Starting with Buddhist
temple-flavoured gong tweaking the collective nipples of Kraftwerk, a deep
sphincter-rumbling bass and om chanting might recall ‘Parabol’. After 3 minutes
of this nerve-wracking niceness, all Hell breaks loose with mega-heavy riffdom
before slipping back into spaciness after 30 seconds. Like an epileptic
convulsion in a night of deep sleep. Hawkwind does Greensleeves whilst Pink
Floys look on. The Record Company people are starting to look nervous and
uncomfortable as if they have seldom HEARD anything so strange and worrying.
What the f@!# is this? Let me outta here! I need to go snuggle the Radio One
Playlist! Suddenly it’s a crazed sea shanty for whacked-out space travelers.
‘You’re the only one who can hold your head up high. It’s my time now… my time
now… give me my… give me my…’ duets Maynard with himself. Danny fights free of
the evil clutches of Dr Baresi and goes off on one. Adam’s guitar recalls
something off Lateralus again. It’s Triad, I think, but it’s almost impossible
to identify one riff whilst another song goes on. The musical equivalent of
rubbing one’s head and tummy simultaneously in different directions. They’re
doing this on purpose to f@!# with our heads. Bastards! Returns to full-on
rhythmic Toolishness to end. No it isn’t the end. It doesn’t end like any other
song ends. Tool never ends. I’m losing it. Therap me now, please.

Track 5 (Probably. 6min 11 sec definitely). Oooooooh. This is THE one. Ya know
what, pluggers? Radio might even go for this! Maynard’s vocals at the start are
quite extraordinary. Place equal parts of Chris De Burgh, Tiny Tim and Bilal The
Muezzin in a blender and run for your life. Easily the most commercial track to
date. In fact, easily the most commercial track Tool have EVER done. That guitar
is waaay strong again. Did Adam bribe Baresi? This is still twisted. It’s hard
but commercial. The end spells a relief as climactic as a boil bursting. I go
‘Yessssss’ and the whole room of cool jouros looks round at me as if I’m a
Bateman cartoon ‘The Man Who Ordered A Pork Sandwich In Blooms’. This is a
SERIOUSLY awesome track. Just you mark my words.

Track 6 (1min). In which Maynard becomes a Native American for no good reason.
Strange, but we like a bit of strangeness.

Track 7 (Maybe. Could be two medium length tracks and a terribly short one, too.
I’m now losing the will to live with the stopwatch. It’s 14min 45sec of music,
whatever). Guitars to the fore again. One long note with almost blues-like,
overlaid note progressions. f@!# me, it’s House Of The Rising Sun cut with
Ketamine. There are unsettling whispers and talking. Is this a bad trip or a
psychiatry session? Come to think of it, is there a difference? ‘How Are You
Today?’… ‘Tell Me Everything’ then THWACK! Into such a breathtakingly slappy,
powerful riff kick that I’m actually physically winded for a nanosecond.
Demonic, growling, rap noise over rhythmic heavy heavy groove. Forget the Were
Rabbit jibe. This is a f@!# full-on, nasty, shaven headed WEREWOLF. A lightbulb
goes mental in the room. The Record Company almost lose all cool and run for it.
I damn nearly join them but now I AM crying. I am gulping back wracking sobs at
the sheer Toolishness of this monstrous, magnificent track. This is the real
deal. Again snippets from Lateralus. You ARE playing with us. You ARE! This is
Tool’s equivalent of ‘spot the Hitchcock in the Hitchcock film’! But I don’t
care. It’s like The Best Of Tool in one song. The Bomb. It ends like the violent
end of a violent life. And then it ends again. Unless that’s another track, of
course….

Track 8 (6min 44sec). Odd noises. Sea shore meets ironworks. Ever see the
cartoon meisterwerk ‘Spirited Away’? You MUST! In it there is a character called
Kamajii The Boiler Keeper who has 6 arms and an army of small black coals. This
sound is similar. Soon joined by elastic bass and drum twangling over
multi-layered Maynard whisperings and chanted vox. Shades of Pink Floyd again.
Shades of the more ‘moody’ Lateralus tracks again. Reflection. Disposition.
Tribal and hypnotic.

Track 9 (9min 04sec. I think). Melodic, slow, hypnotic. Almost balladic. Wall of
Sound build-up. Danny does some Bamboo pole-type drumming into big rif***e. Big, big sound. Tool at their weightiest. It’s almost Chinese at the end. I can think
of worse things to be like. Perhaps the boys have their eyes on the World’s
fastest developing market?

Track 10 (OK it’s 11 but I’m f@!# if I can work out how we got here). The walk
out track (their description not mine). Oddness. The Noodles of Satan.

And that’s it. First playback and Maynard bids us farewell. ‘Hope you enjoyed
it. If you didn’t we could put on a little Green Day for you?’. Second playback
and Justin apologises for not being The Arctic Monkeys. We smoodge and chatter.
We remember that Danny is actually the World’s nicest (and tallest) man. If only
I could feel as comfy in my skin as he does. That’s it – go on, compare my
insides with his outsides. We rejoice in the fact that ¼ of Tool is, in fact,
English. We clamber onto our pushbike past legions of hoodies whilst the Tool
Carnival ups and offs to Amsterdam. f@!# knows where THAT playback will take
place but I have a shrewd idea or two…

AMSTERDAM LISTENING SESSION

Sunday night (Feb. 26th) the day we’ve been waiting for was finally here. A handful of journalists were allowed to hear the entire new tool album, without knowing the track titles or album title.

The location for the listening session was original; a former monastery in the middle of the Amsterdam red light district. In the alley where it was there were women behind windows on the left and a doorman to let you in on the right. If you didn’t know where it was you would have walked past it.

Right after entering a girl from the record company shoves a contract under everyone’s noses in which we have to promise we won’t publish anything about the album till 13 April. Apparently there was some excitement/trouble after the review from a previous listening session in London was put on-line. A shame.

At the bottom of the stairs we enter the hall from the picture above. Imagine some chandeliers with burning candles, three speaker-towers/stacks with flat screen monitors showing all video’s and a couple of white couches from the lounge era (late 90’s). Nobody eats the French bread, tapenade, nuts, coleslaw and other treats.

After 30 minutes of drinking and socialising drummer Danny Carey, who has been walking around all evening with a beer in his hand, enters with a cd in his hands. The visitors all get wireless headphones and are allowed to enjoy on the couches. Danny Carey says ‘eet smakelijk’ (enjoy your meal) and wishes us fun. He walks to the vip area with bass player Justin Chancellor. Maynard doesn’t show himself.

We are spoiled during the listening session, the waitresses give us many warm and cold snacks, so we don’t have to get up during listening. It’s almost a silent disco, more than 30 people nod their heads to the beat, occasionally disturbed by the sound of breaking glass. Afterwards Maynard, wearing a cowboy hat, walks into the hall and is handed a microphone. Everyone takes off their headphones in a reflex, but you needed those to hear the singer. “ Thank you for you time and your patience, and now go away!”

Justin and Maynard disappear immediately afterwards, Danny takes his times to answer some questions and sign some booklets. According to the colossal drummer the band will be playing besides at Pinkpop in the HMH (the Heineken music hall, a venue in Amsterdam). Probably in the same week as Pinkpop or in the last week of June. There is no more time; We are kicked out of the building in a friendly way because there is another listening round for the international press.

Because of the embargo I’ve not been able to say anything about the record itself, but with my notes I can write something here on 13 April. There won’t be promo cd’s before the release of 2 may. The question is whether this approach is useful. A record store employee noted that the arctic monkeys leaked songs on purpose and their album is very successful. And even if I keep my mouth shut, there will probably be someone else who will put something online about the listing session.

not only amazon, but a few more "mainstream" websites have said that may 2nd will be the release date....

it comes to a point where "questioning everything, everyone, all the time" becomes childish.

also a band cannot and won´t spread lies all the time, otherwise they become "the boy who shouted wolf". they lose their credibility. no matter who you are, you are no better than anyone to spread lies all the time and hope everybody licks your balls.

in fact, IMHO, that would be absolutely AGAINST all Tool stands for. where´s respect? "compassion"? evolved communication?

to have control over your art BEFORE its released is something (because AFTER it becomes property of the world) but to make a fool out of professionals who are just doing their jobs (the press) is lack of respect.

no matter who you are, eventually you fall down.

'Cause I'm in that sort of mood today... the talkbox scoop (okay so it was called a voicebox!) was on toolband's message board on Feb 21...

"Other things - the sampled thunder/rainstorm and Adam playing a voicebox at one point (see: Peter Frampton)." : )

Best part:

"and that a tour with ISIS is a distinct possibility."
it's funny because ISIS are god-awful xD

Probbably posted, but...

Adam uses a wet/dry adjuster pedal for other pedals.
Also, it has a lot of Native American and pagan musical influences.

I know that Zac from 'Rage against the machines' makes an appearance on the album...
Alright you can all thump me with insults now.. or not waste your time.. But hey how sweet is that news nonetheless! x

I previously posted a report on the Dutch listening session, that was very well translated by somebody else. I promised to tell more after the embargo on April 13th. I was too busy to write a detailed review untill then, but if you check

there is my story. Too busy to translate it myself right now, but if the person who did it last time is able to, be my guest. :)

Hes producing? I mean, i like all of his music but to me it doesn't seem like he is any good for Tool's style, he's mostly punk rock and stoner music...

And All along, i thought TOOL was stoner music.

He's walking around with chains dragging behind him on the ground. That's what was said about one song .
Also, the mix done allows you to hear every instrument perfectly clear and level is what i think she meant. Is that what you didn't understand.
We'll wait and see what she was talking about.
