So I have this "online friend" that has been trying to get a account on tdn for a few years. But for some reason it's not letting him get an account. But anyways he wanted me to post this on tdn for him....

okay...so i went into NYC and went to the alex grey art exhibit....long story short, I ran into Alex Grey(which was so awsome)...I ask him about the new TOOL album...he says, "On the new TOOL album Maynard has taken a whole new approach to singing on the album....no one has ever done what hes done before...he doesnt even really sing on some of the songs..instead of saying words he'll just say syllables or the beginning of words..and they are done recording." So...i mean...this is some awsome news...i cant wait to hear MJK's new style on singing...or whatever he is gonna sound like... im even more amped now!!!!!! And What is this not saying words business? Just syllables? Anyway...this is pretty reliable news ya know...from alex grey...and he mentioned some shit that Adam Jones has stepped it up...woooo....

Lisa Gerrard beat him to the phonetic singing thing by about 25 years.

If Alex Grey knows anything he wouldn't be allowed to say it. That sounds completely retarded too.

I think in an old update, not long before they started recording, blair said they made people who were there sign something that said they wouldn't talk about what happened.

Why not? I don't think Tool would do anything to Alex Grey. Plus..it's not like he let someone listen to a song lol.

I'm gonna go with tom on this one. That sounds pretty retarded. If that's really how he's going to vocalize on the album, it's going to suck.

yeah but isnt there a song called choked? and he does the no vocal/chant like thing.

It isnt that bad but ide hope he wrote some lyrics to go with it.

Alex must have seen the short bus your friend took to the exhibit, so he figured it was alright to tell him juicy secrets about an upcoming album. Ya know, since your friend was wearing a drool stained tool shirt.

The whole weirdass vocal style could have something to do with that enigmatic morse code thing that we TDNers have been trying to figure out

Instead of being sung, Maynard's lyrics will now be audially morse-coded.

Try "The Host of Seraphim" or "Persephone (the gathering of flowers)" by Dead Can Dance.

Maynard has taken a whole new approach to singing on the album... he doesnt even really sing on some of the songs..i nstead of saying words he'll just say syllables or the beginning of words...

This is not new. Maynard has been singing in syllables for a long time, especially in APC. Go back and listen to old stuff and you will hear him extend a scale on one syllable of one word. That is one thing that makes him a great singer.

Heaps of people have already done that. Alex Gray must be a real dumbass.

Sounds interesting. So some of the songs will be like that and not all, which is good, maybe it's like ven...o...mous voice or eu...phor...i...a, although it's already been done they might expand on this form of 'singing' further.

Whatever they case may be, whatever style they produce, it will be original and should be totally different from their last as they have already proved.

I love how he sings. Not many vocalists add to the music like he does. Hes got his own instrument.

I don't believe any of this is true. If Maynard just sang beginnings of words he'd sound like he was mentally challenged or something.

hopelandic doesn't MEAN anything, its just natural syllables that fit with the music. no lyrics. thus, if maynard is doing what anaemic is describing, it is something that has been done before.

Agreed...

...not a stupid thread, just old.

Makes you wonder though, with all the disputed lyrics, and blatent discrepencies... just how many word/phrase/sylables did he blend in the album?

Or maybe, just maybe, his friend didn't meet Alex Grey, or he met Alex Grey but he didn't say this, or Alex Grey was having fun with him, or . . . you get the picture. I find it hard to believe that anyone who had ever heard an album by any rock band would call "ohs" and "heys" amazing or a whole new way of singing.
