Visual creation programs

Does anyone know of any good, (preferably FREE), downloads for visual animation creation programs? I have many good ideas for videos,animations, etc. but no medium...

photoshop(graphics) and flash(animation)

very expensive, yet ...er easy to find should i say???

you understand, perhaps a friend knows where to "purchase" such items

if you are not looking for that route, perhaps you could try www.download.com and search for animation programs, i'm not to sure on their affinity with good graphics creating programs, however i have found a couple decent animation programs to create animated gifs.
