View Full Version : a note on release dates in general...

hey, no specific news here but i wanted to address an issue about all this "july release!!!" bullshit.

for those who don't know, record companies have to notify cd stores (hell, manufacturers before that) WELL in advance before an album comes out, for the most part. if anyone gets on here saying about the album coming out before, let's say, mid-august, it's bullshit unless your local big-ass cd store says they've got a date in for it. granted there are exceptions, but release dates usually get announced 2 months at least in advance. it's the same with dvd's. or it least it was a year or two ago, i'm sure it's about the same now.

I'm betting on a fall or winter release.

you're dead on with the september release date. It will be out on 10-13-05

the number 13 is also significant with this new album.

I doubt they have even finished recording the whole album, and when they do finish, they'll just do nothing for a year.

What's to say they haven't?

Maybe there are thousands of copies of the album stored in a remote wine cellar in Arizona and Tool is just waiting for one of us to guess the name of the album before they release them.

It's been a long time since we had new Tool material, and who knows if I'll ever like them as much as I used to. For me, the suspense is non-existant, but it'd be cool to hear some new stuff.

What's to say they haven't?

i am. *grin* follow my logic, and i don't mean to sound condescending. y'know how blockbuster and fye and media play and all them have their big release date boards up, as well as the promo posters that say stuff like "tool - don't wanna be your monkey wrench - the new album - in stores december 25th!!!"? they tend to put up release dates and posters 4-6 weeks in advance, which means they receive word of these same posters and release date signs a week or two before THAT, and they receive word in a thing that's KINDA like a monthly (or weekly depending on the store) inventory, kind of a "hey, in 2 weeks you should be getting a large promo poster for tool's new album" heads-up thing. when they get that inventory it has the release date for the new album next to it so john q workingman knows he better put the goddamn poster up before then. this inventory is also made so they can look in it when you ask "hey man, when's the new britney spears coming out?" and they say "hmm, looks like we've got a new single coming out august 29th, son" and then you know to fill up the car with gas and set your alarm for 9:50am so's you can get to the store in time to buy it as they unlock their doors in the morning.

the reason i know they haven't done this is because if you walk into any corporate record store anytime soon and ask about a release date for a new tool album, you'll probably get laughed out of your mall. funny, if you walk into any indie record store and ask about a release date for a new tool album, they'll laugh you out of their vintage clothing neighborhood for not knowing ALREADY. *rolls eyes*

anyway, as soon as an actual release date pops up, every best buy employee who thinks he's so the shit for having long hair will be all over here like a fat kid at a bake sale telling us when it is.

see, SOMEbody understands.

[QUOTE=idiotboy]i am. *grin* follow my logicQUOTE]

Yea, I already did, I was just throwing that out there.

You have to agree that it would be cool if they completely defied convention and suddenly one day within the month, the shelves of Best Buy had a Tool CD and DVD? No warning. No promo-posters. Just complete surprise.

idiotboy
06-15-2005, 08:42 PM
yeah, definitely, that would be the tits. that kind of happened for me with the nine inch nails single for "the day the world went away". i didn't know any websites with reliable info, and i'd been at my dad's parents house with no computer for like a month, and i finally make my way to a cd store and check the nine inch nails section and "heyyyyyyyyyyy, lookithat...". i'd love it if tool did that, it would be hilarious. career suicide, but hilarious. i think volcano would crucify them before they'd let that happen.

its kinda lame how there is all this speculation. it's not like the speculation will get the record out any sooner. I'd rather know it's coming out tommorow then finding out the date is set for 3 months from now, because counting the days blows.

Actually when you come back you'll learn that the title of the upcoming album has an "L" and nothing more. Keep coming bakc after your tdn inactivity and you just may spell out the album title for us.

I have a feeling this is the way it will be, and I agree with you: i like it better because i hate counting days or even months. I doubt we will know anything until about a month before release, maybe even less time. I think tool will tell the record company to keep it quiet until the last possible second. This keeps the suspense, and will help to keep it off the internet 2 months early (which happens to a lot of bands who insist on giving information way too early).

I was discussing this with a fellow Toolophile. How would you guys react if you just walked into your cd store, and you saw a new Tool album just sitting on the shelf?

I would piss my pants, change my pants, and then buy the album of course.
