No. The theme for undertow at, least lyrically, is water. There are water refrences all over the songs.

The water theme is all over the CD, from the boat motor that opens Intolerance, through swamp song (Bog), Undertow (the pull from waves that sucks you in), and Flood.

I feel like all the pictures in the booklet (and the suspicious 69 tracks) have everything to do with the "life feeds on life" feel.

Disgustipated is merely using carrots to show how pathetic religion can be sometime. "Save the carrots!". I think they thought "lets pick a vegetable" and carrots just seemed right ;)

Siddhartha does nothing; he waits, he thinks, he fasts, but he goes through the affairs of the world like the stone through the water, without doing anything, without bestirring himself; he is drawn and lets himself fall. He is drawn by his goal, for he does not allow anything to enter his mind which opposes his goal. ... It is what fools call magic and what they think is caused by demons. ... Everyone can perform magic, everyone can reach his goal, if he can think, wait, and fast.

You're right about the animal theme actually. Undertow was originally called "Animals" The track listing was as follows:

1. Rats (Intolerance)
2. Dogs (Prison Sex)
3. Okapee (Sober)
4. Mollusks (Bottom)
5. Crabs (Crawl Away)
6. Cats (Swamp Song)
7. Pigs (Undertow, reason Undertow is on pig's side in booklet)
8. Lions (4*)
9. Locusts (Flood)
10. Sheep (Disgustipated)

They had to change it though because Maynard stumbled upon a Pink FLoyd album that happened to be called "Animals" already. Surprisingly enough, it included songs with the names "Dogs", "Sheep", and "Pigs". The coincidence got even weirder when they saw the cover art of a pig floating above a factory: Danny Carey had suggested the very same thing for the Tool album. So the album title itself and all the song names had to be changed so Tool wouldn't look like ripoffs. They were still able to keep the pig on the back cover though, so Undertow was considered a success.

yes.. like

shit adds up at the bottom.. it has a few meanings but the water based.. is the sediments on the ocean floor....

flood obviously

undertow...

intolorance.. sounds like someones is drowning.. or a bong hit.. but both still involve water

.... the album's theme is obviously water... and i have an interview with mjk from a radio station in canada and he said " the guys really like my song titles.. and they tend to pick one that really sums up the record" every album is named after a song tile which is intertwined with the themes of all the albums..... there you have it
