Anyone else notice the logo on the toolband entrance? Thought it was interesting, if nothing else. New background was cool too, maybe has something to do with the new album cover?

I don't mind it, except for the transition from the T to the first O, like others have mentioned. Other than that, it looks pretty cool. The font looks more gothic now, too.

The logo is pretty crude, but with a few touch ups it could be bitching. I like the background quite a bit though, it's got an organic, disorderly vibe to it.

as everyone has said...

The "T" to the first "O" needs to be changed or fixed up or a reason given as to why it's fucked up....

the logo doesn't flow like past logos......

Wow, that looks worse then most metal band logos, and the movement of the background is very choppy.

I think it looks quite cool when it moves choppy, the new logo is bollocks and better be changed soon.

Andy DV
04-21-2005, 11:37 PM
its nearly identical in form to the previous lateralus logo, but with a more polished, pointed, mechanical, nonorganic look. i think that and the engine type sounds on the intro page give me a glimpse as to what the album might entail.

The "T" to the first "O" needs to be changed or fixed up or a reason given as to why it's fucked up....

ha yea man, they should put a disclaimer under the logo that states "don't be confused folks, the t and the o are accidentally blended together but due to budgetary reasons we are unable to correct this mistake. we apologize for any confusion this may cause you."

Misanthrope
04-21-2005, 11:58 PM
The logo looked horrible, and the background thing was probably a good idea, but as Panzefaust said, very choppy.

I'm hoping the sounds on that page is in indication of the type of music on the next album.

GregoryWohlwend
04-22-2005, 12:27 AM
i agree with misanthrope, but i'm quite positive it's not a new logo, it's just joshua davis' deal, he has complete creative licence with the TOOL website, as i hear.

also, i'm positive the chopiness is deliberate... as to coincide with the music...

drunkenbaby
04-22-2005, 03:03 AM
Not quite sure why the transition between the t and o are important. But whatever floats yer boat.

I think it looks cool. The moving, pulsating, coloured 'grubs' are pretty damn good. And those sounds are rather creepy. Sounds like someone slowly winding up a jack-in-the-box.

I wonder when Jack comes out to play?

if you go to the site mentioned, once-upon-a-forest.com, theres art. Notice that there is maruto mentioned in the code and also on the site, notice you can change the numbers by clicking the arrows... this means something, someone figure it out.

also, the code on once upon a forest is pretty interesting, obviously by the artist. Its a good read.

From the code:

"Dynamic Abstraction"

Among modern artists I conceptually identify with Jackson Pollock - not
that I'm a particular fan of his visual style, but because he always
identified himself as a painter, even though a lot of the time his brush
never hit the canvas. There's something in that disconnect - not using a
brush or tool in traditional methods - that says a lot about the concept
of dynamic abstraction, because in that loss of control there can be
beauty in randomness.

Pollock might argue that it's the process of abstraction that's dynamic,
not the end result, which in his case is a static painting. In my own
work, the end result is never static; by making room for as many
anomalies as possible, every composition generated by the programs I
write is unique to itself. I program the "brushes," the "paints," the
"strokes," the rules and the boundaries. However it is the machine that
creates the compositions -- the programs draw themselves. I am in a
constant state of surprise and discovery, because the program may
structure compositions that I may never have thought of to execute or
might take me hours to create manually.

For me, the art form is not in the few days it takes me to write the
program. The art is the few weeks I will spend living with the work,
waiting for the work to evolve. Running functions, re-running functions,
always waiting to capture that moment in time - the beautiful accident.

The new logo is cool, I thinl, except the little blotch between the T and the O needs to ge. I like the art; it'd be cool if the album looked like that. The rest of the website needs revamped; the links page still reads "Left-brain/Right-brain", etc.

I agree, to me it sounds like the winding up of something, like a Jack-in-the-Box.

I think it'd be cool to have the sound of the winding and then just as the <Jack> should pop up with a scream or something, a kickass heavy riff could begin, and on with the show....

5th Eye
04-26-2005, 08:38 AM
Also...** Were there any songs left over from the sessions for this album?

Three songs from "Ænima" didn't make the album, but did show up on "Salival" four years later. As for "Lateralus", Danny said this in Meanstreet Magazine (May 2001): "We had more little bits and pieces that we wanted to put in between the songs, but when we went to mastering we had to leave out a lot of those. The manufacturer would only guarantee us up to 79 minutes. So our record is 78 minutes and 58 seconds long. We thought we'd give them 2 seconds of breathing room."

So maybe the "bits and pieces" will show up someday... I doubt that the background sound is new material. I think it's a bit from Lateralus, just like the intro noise on the Parabola video. But that's just my thought. It's a cool sound though.

on the intro page, the web-like lines in the back are getting more spread out and elaborate all the time - the program has an AI element to it that creates art itself. its hard to notice on a day-to-day basis, but on the first day the page was put up, the greyish lines in the background were just starting to branch out...now look at it. there are also more little floating dots, etc, and the spirals appear to be getting more fluid and larger, although that may just be me since my computer doesnt always run very smoothly.

That once-upon-a-forest.com DEFINATELY has a link, even the artwork is similar, have a look at it if you havent, it has organic, swirling patterns, with dots randomly positioned arround the place, which is exactly like the new intro page, except tool has made it move.

Some things ive noticed about the source for the intro page.

Both the websites that are mentioned have obviouse links in the graphic design and artwork, they are:

http://once-upon-a-forest.com/
http://www.deptofnotation.com/

A statement is made in the source that reads:

"maruto who hates nofriendo who loves mobiusrunner"

Maruto is the artist of once-apon-a-forrest. NoFirendo is a word that is used by a number of different people and sites as another name for Nintendo.

Some strange links, maybe they mean nothing at all, and its just to keep us guessing, thats what i rekon.

It's not a masterpiece or anything, but I think it's more in the spirit of t00l. Notice the subtle flare effect in the background.Right.

I wasn't trying to make the logo look that much better or anything...I spent about 30 seconds on each of those...so...yeah.

Edit: And I finally found the little red dot too.

the logo isnt very nice, looks like a title on one of those old atari games

Yeah, looks like a metal band's logo, or something, I don't think they could make the lateralus logo thinner and longer, like real arabic, and add some of those dot like things.

The lightning bolt looks gay... I can imagine a photo of the band wearing spandex below the logo... future album name: The TOOLcredibles!

The cowboy hat made that picture.
And the fact he's holding a helmet too. Now how is he going to put it on with that cowboy hat?

THOUGHTFUL TIP: Next time don't use big bitmaps, cuz they're huge and take a long time to load.

I have noticed something about Toolband's title page (where the new logo currently resides).

This could totally just be my subconscious trying to legitimize anxious feelings about the new album, but it seems to me that the creaking and "sawing" noises have gotten louder, more urgent, and slightly more "determined"-sounding. I also don't hear quite as much pause or silence between each noise anymore--almost like they're overlapping each other more often and more intentionally.

Perhaps this is a portent for the imminent album...and of course, perhaps I am completely wrong and gullible to my own desires.

Wait.... what part?

When the new logo first appeared the 'creaking' and types of sounds were a few seconds apart and not as fast, now they are happening so fast its almost lke they are overlapping.

I don't think so; it sounds the same to me. And I listened closely, really I did...
