It's pretty well-concluded that the song is not about Jesus; the whole "cross" thing is just a metaphor.

that song is kind of about jesus right,sort of maybe,well i dont think maynard would make a song about himself,and wrap it around the facade of jesus. and i dont think maynard would do that ................................... or would he?
If you study up on your history you will learn that crucifixion had been used before Jesus even existed (as a common death for thieves). You will also note that Jesus had not been the first or last martyr to have been crucified. In conclusion, just because something mentions martyrdom and crucifixion does not mean it is speaking of Jesus (or anything Christian for that matter).
