What is that sound?

New to the forums!

Anyway, the sound at the beginning of the song, not the gibson guitar picking part that adam does, but the sort of synthetic sound, that eventually transforms itself into maynard singind, what is it? I saw a live version of the song, and maynard seemed to be holding a sort of hair dryer, and singing through it into the mic, i tried this at home, with no result. Anyone know what it is, how it works?

Basically, MJK is singing a single note into a megaphone (with the horn part taken off) and tapping the trigger, so you only hear bits and pieces of the held note.

There may be a few effects on it, but that's what he's diong to make the sound.

Are you speaking of the live version or the album version?? For if it is the album version there is dirge music being played at the very beginning, altough it is very quite. I had to use my friends really crazy stereo to turn down everything else except the sound.
