Forgive me for not remembering the poem, but one of Edgar Allen Poe's works has the lines "Step by step, inch by inch" within one of its stanzas. The lines
Eleven. Lead me through each gentle step
By step
By inch my loaded memory
remind me of Poe's words. Could this be intentional? Is it just a coincidence? I would like your input on this. Also, I'm wondering if "By inch my loaded memory" could be referring to the narrator's "loaded memory" itself as small but essential and completing, like an inch is to a yard.
