perhaps the answer could be found in the book "The Scarlet Letter" by natalie hawthorne(sp?)

the letter was "A" and it stood for adultery, i think.. its been a long time since i read that..

The scarlett letterman was a reference to not forgiving someone. Adultry in those times was not taken lighty as well it should not be. But thats probably the point. Dont take something small like someone accidentally doing something to you and blow it out of proportion; turning them into your scarlet letterman.When you see them all you see is the letter on their chest and not the real person. Its just a symbol to overthing and overanalyzing. heh.
