unless slipknot? that is just constant screaming nonense with no meaning though

Windir
03-08-2004, 02:41 AM
Then you never listened closely to what they sing...

Anyway... I don't think it is the longest scream ever, cause we've been over this a couple of times and I'm almost sure that people said there was some song where some dude screamed longer then Maynard did.

If you guys sing along with Tool (which most of you do), then you will be able to scream the same length as Maynard did.
Practice :Þ

Yeah...

Yeah...

Yeah if you have the lung capacity of a ..... uhhhhh......... person with a large lung capacity.

Well, I think my lungs are pretty big... maybe huge...
Or... at least, they aren't small... or little... or something...

Yeah but can you actually scream full on, at a loud volume for thirty seconds, if you can you're a better man than I.

Windir

I have tried it when I sang along with The Grudge...
And to be honoust, yes... I made it a couple of times... not all the time though.

How?

Windir

Well... just relax your body...
Take a deeeeeep breathe...
And scream your lungs out...

That's all... piece of cake!

No way you can scream at the top of your lungs for a full 30 seconds.

lilli
03-08-2004, 04:29 PM
I doubt the scream is real, his vocals are mixed as fu*k, in some live bootlegs he sounds awful.

If you filled your lungs to their full capacity you could stand inside them, it's your ribs and organs that get in the way. Take your ribs out and you could scream more, you can all give yourselves head too.

holy reality
03-08-2004, 04:53 PM
yeah he has a sustainer and flange on his voice as well as possibly distortion... but i honestly thing he DOES scream that long, he just relies heavily on the effects to make it sound pretty...

because I mean try screaming, your voice goes AAAAAAAaaaaa-a-a-AAaaAAAaAaa... and there are lots of gaps and cracks and such so you know it would smooth all that shit out.

plus listen to his live APC screams, namely the outsider... fucking great.... at least half as long as the grudge they seemed to me... and a lot less effects, so I think he can usually do the grudge scream, just not necessarily very well, and it's got to be hard on the throat, hence the fx etc...

I wasn't doing it along with the song, but I once screamed, like, a nu-metal-type scream or whatever, for 29 seconds. I was physically sick after doing it; my face itched on the inside and my head was pounding. I'm somewhat of a vocalist... I'm not in a professional band currently but I play and sing all the time.

I guess my point is, it can be done.

I wish I could get Maynard's awesome tone.

that shit is hard because unlike holding your breath, you are screaming it rapidly. i think that someone here said it was like 31 or 41 seconds, thats pretty damn hefty.

maynard has always had that scream.. i love the octave it is in

I've been like singing along with Tool for ever and like you said... maybe I have big lungs.

thanks misanthrope, that tomahawk song is sweet. but i dont think the yell is better than the grudge one, the grudge one has more aggression and is a bit longer i think. but cheers for telling me, at least now i know that this real long yell thing isnt a new thing. its not new but it will never get old :) unless all numetal groups do it :P i havent finished downloading the meshuggah song yet so ill see how that goes when i get it

I saw APC live once...and Maynard did the scream at the end of Judith and held it out like three times as long as he does on the album...he was screaming for nigh...nye...nie...on a minute. It was wonderful. But then again, after the song he seemed kinda dazed.

I wonder if they turn up his mic during the grudge scream, because if you don't use as much air and don't do it really loud it's not all that hard, but at that volume... man. it's pretty awesome though.

Whoops. Anyway, I can hold a growl for a good 25 seconds, but thats a bit different. Growls don't require a lot of breath, and it seems a lot easier to hold growls because (at least I) don't use my full lung capacity to growl, while wen you scream, it seems to require more breath. But I'm not a singer. I play drums.

Lackymacky

its really easy to do the scream thing, or maybe its just me, cause i dont scream all that hard, i sort of yell. i figure thats what mjk does, they just put up the volume. maybe im wrong, is he actually yelling?? cause thats hardddddddddddddddddd

Is that the longest scream someone has done on a song? if theres something better can i have the name so i can download it

I would'nt call it a scream.

Maynard inspired me to start studying vocal seriously, which is why I'm making this particular call :

There's a technique called "vocal fry", in which you add a raspy "screaming edge" to your voice. You know when you wake up in the morning, and say, "oh, I don't wanna get up out of bed" that sort of voice? Its the only way to add that harsh sound to your voice without injuring it. In this song, and in the end of Judith, and "good, BYYYYYEEEEE" in Eulogy are good examples.

A real "scream" by maynard I would say would be Jerk Off or Ticks and Leeches, where his vocal cords really are clenched all the way and he's just forcing air into them, and the tone becomes distorted. With Maynard's vocal fry, however, his cords sound open and relaxed and his actual tone shines through.

And Maynard is simply better at the vocal fry technique than anyone I've ever heard. Its his trademark.

The scream is pretty mad

The music course at school, we use Protools a profesional music mixing program

Some of the things u can do, is with the vocal track, when you do a scream ( or anything else) you can take a note from it and stretch it as long as you want, for example, u can say YEH!, take the voval movements of the E and make it go for a minute.
But TOOl prolly do it naturally, im not sure, it just amazing how well he can keep the exact same note for so long

The Grudge scream is the best part of the song. Adam's got that acidic riff going full swing under Maynard, and right before it Justin has a small solo.

Maynard's screams usually like fade in if you know what I mean. Like in The Grudge, he held it forever, and it like fades away. I think its really cool. I don't know if its effect or what. But its fucking awesome. The Eulogy scream is long too.

Oeps
08-28-2004, 06:14 AM
I've heard just 1 scream that was much longer.
Iced Earth - Iced Earth with Tim 'the Ripper' Owens on vocals on their last tour; the scream he did was so long I couldn't even believe it. And I wouldn't have believed it if I wasn't on one of their shows. The scream is 32 sec (in winamp; I have the live bootleg)....The scream Maynard holds in The grudge is about 20 sec I thought.
Maynard's scream is real; maybe al little bit remastered to keep te tone so very constant, but that's all

It can't be faked; if you listen closely there's some fluctuations in the scream itself so it's not a short scream stretched out. Plus, I've seen vids of him doing it live. Everyone in the audience tried to do it with him; no one got farther than about half of Maynard's screm. It blows me away.

I haven't heard the Iced Earth or Messugah screams, but I'd recommend to check out Jim Gellette from Nitro. The song Machine Gun Eddie from the album O.F.R. That song was done back in 1994 and judging from the recording he didn't use any effects. Also, he's married to Lita Ford. I think there is a video of him breaking a glass with his voice somewhere too.

The most insane scream i have ever heard came from Catch 33. On track 12 "Dehumanization" At 2:09 Jens lets off a 14 second scream at an octave that seems to rip between mesurable waves and frequencies. Not as long as The Grudge scream, but far more impressive I think. Ohh he does this twice on this song..damn.
And the last track "Sum" seems to be longer but im guessing it might be lengthned digitally.

Every time I hear it I try and listen really closely and so this is what I reckon.
