i have heard so many different interpretations of this song. i feel that maynard may write his songs this way on purpose. like, maybe he writes them so that there can be many interpretations of his lyrics. he leaves it up to you about what the song means to you. i think that if we really knew what it meant to him, it wouldnt be the same. he only says enough to spark your imagination. he wants people to get something from his music, but doesnt want to limit what you get to just one thing. if that makes sense....
i feel that this song is about desensification. i hope i am using the right words to explain myself. like after somthing bad happens in the world, we are almost desensified to it. for example, the whole columbine shooting. after that whole thing, there was that elementary school shooting. which in my opion, was a lot worse than it happening at a high school. but they didnt make as big of a deal about it on the news. because we had been desensified to the idea. i hope i am making sense. we learn to excet things after they have already been done. well, not except but we are not as shocked. after something bad happens, when it happens again, the shock value has gone down. we get use to things too easily in my opinion. i think that the media has a big part in that. well, thats about it. i hope i didnt confuse anyone or sound stupid.

Desensitised? I definately agree with the first part of your post. Everyone has their own different version of what the song could mean because the lyrics are written in such a way that they leave a lot to the imagination. As for what Stinkfist's about well, thats up to you, really. But one things for sure it is NOT about gay sex and/ or fisting.

Indeed some good ideas, desensification (ummm.. spelling?) is what i see to be the issue here
TV and the media, as you said, show us horrifying images in the news and in entertainments and film and then of course theres porn, far less controversy there these days, no? But the person themselves can also become less sensitive to these, and need to see more extreme images to get the same shock factor

This is also evident with drugs, its pretty hard to get as high as you did when you took them the first time, you get used to it and need more to get to the same level, this is evident in a lot of things; too much of anything will become samey, boring and increasingly less stimulating, bordom's not a burden anyone should bare...

The song, for me, explains this using the example of sex (namely anal fisting, niiiiceeee!) having to push it a bit further each time, 'ill keep digging till i feel something'
Then of course 'What became of subtlety?' when everything you do for pleasure needs to be so extreme?

Anyways, ive rambled enough, i hope it makes sense, im not very good at putting my thoughts into coherent sentences. I also totally agree with with whats been said about the ambiguous meanings in tool songs, and understanding what the songs mean to YOU is a very good way of looking at it

So, take care

the line "turn around and take my hand" is not your ordinary handshake or helping hand. Well maybe a helping hand as in the rapist helping its victim to overcome the virtues of sex.

Maybe it's that smiley glad hand that they talk about in Ænema. Take it farther and farther up. Desensitise yourself. Keep on digging until we find something that is worth a little bit of our time. Maybe it will provide a little piece (peace) of mind.

Then what explains "hidden agenda's"? ls that when you find what's worth time and keeping it to yourself?

dont know about the gladhands. Just that I have for a very long time interpreted that line as merely MJK telling someone that he is there to help her by taking her hand, and when it hit me.. GOD BLUSHED!

Well it seems to me like that is the obvious. Do you think it could mean something different? l mean, it's pretty litteral.

The hidden agenda could be the reason he wants her to take his hand. He wants to find/feel something new and exciting. She is just his (TOOL) as it were. His agenda is to use her or him to find what he's looking for, maybe she is what he needs to feel, maybe she is just the shovel he needs to help him find something.

well Allforunity and Luna G maybe you are in for the surprise I had when I discovered the alternative. As the song makes a perfect analogy to fisting (shoving your hand into a vagina) as a way of reaching for pure feelings, I bet MJK means that he turns around and take my hand.. up the ass. So to speak. And indeed he is helping her but not by taking her hand in his. Is the man a genius or what?
