The first time through, he says "close enough so I can SMELL you."
The second time through he says "close enough so I can DROWN you."
Listen sharp.
It's significant in that initially he says come up closer..... close enough so I can "smell you..."
As if he's eyeballing his victim. Maybe mentally violating the victim at this point, but nothing physical.
Close enough so I can "drown you."
This is no longer a feeling out / sizing up period...
It's no longer a mental thought.
It has gone from thought to action.
(smell you = the thought of violating the victim)
(drown you = the act of violation)
The "I'm treading water, I need to sleep a while."
Is the author having a tug-o-war in his mind. He knows what he's thinking of doing is totally wrong. He's treading between right and wrong... what he should or should not do. The only way to escape this imbalance in his head is to literally go to sleep for a while. Sleep serves as some temporary sanity for him.
