This isn't my idea, but I always enjoy reading the results. Credit goes to Gregg Easterbrook of Page 2 on espn.go.com, the Tuesday Morning Quarterback, who always asks for haikus on subjects at the end of his column. Easterbrook is more than a football fan, he's a Brooking's scholar and sometimes writes about his insights on organized religion, which I always find interesting.

Anyway, here is my TMQ inspired Tool haiku, they're fun to write:

Musical crowbar
Prying open my third eye
Experience Tool

I reckon that enough people post haikus on this thread, then we would have an amazing book of Tool haikus. The ones already here, especially the ones by my good self, are of an excellent quality. Keep posting them.

What exactly makes a haiku?
Is it just a 3 line poem?
Help me people!!

Limo

A Haiku is a japanese poem, usually pertaining to the elements.

A loose definition of haiku is a three line poem made up of 17 syllables:

5
7
5

Tool to the rescue
Enlightenment has been reached
I have become one again.

They did it all friend,
Took you to the hole and back,
Reached in, saved your soul.

Sucked up, sucked in, flesh.
My rebirth occured in August.
First Tool concert was awesome.

Stereo banging
Third eye singing me to sleep,
Awash in the light.

Life feeds on life, feeds,
Mine feeds on the raw sounds here,
Tool, there is no other.

Thats all I can come up with at the moment.

Swing on a spiral
Enjoy the euphoria
Embracing moment

_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_

You follow like sheep
The sound of your constant "baa's"
I need an amen

_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_

Such beautiful sound
Emitting from the speakers
Who else it be? Tool.

these may not be directly " Tool Haikus " but were inspired by Tool.

Undone by a riff,
Bouncing and tripping along -
Forty-six and two.

Orange juice, vodka,
Forged steel, and plastic handle
Just so. Screwdriver.

I dug the darkness
Out of my mind's shadow with
The help of a tool.

That's enough out of
Me. I will go now and try
To let myself see.

feed your head, she said
live in imagination
spin the world around

communication
it is the key to all things
connection follows

circles spinning ‘round
it is all connected with
strings and things and you

blasted out above
swinging on spirals combine
float above mundane

sever the ego
let it all flow about you
open your third eye

sink between stillness
dive and drown in thought oceans
soak in the silence

liquid skins body
mind power overthrows the
inner self release

let go of meaning
fuck this opinionated
din, and overcome

ha...that was fun....i love haikus. we should make a book...we need more contributers.

good thread.

away with my hate and fear

are there any more rules to haikus?
please tell me so that i can improve on my offering for our book :)

There are no rules for haiku, that I know of; even the form can be played with (3/5/3, etc.) I try to feel the essence of whatever it is that I am trying to describe in the haiku, to become it. Doesn't usually work for me, but if you can achieve oneness with it, you are sure to write a bitchin haiku. But then, you already have, nina.

Intent, decimate
My only brain entirely
Too base, too quickly.

I think haikus are cool because, as the example above shows, I can write seemingly random words and make something that sounds meaningful.

Stares, clouds, hazy eyes
Driving toward nothingness
In my BMW.

No, I don't own a BMW. Think about it. Jerk off, you don't suck at form. You have your opinion, I have mine.

My first Tool concert
October two thousand one
Washington, D.C.

MCI Center
Located in Chinatown
Home of the Wizards

The house lights go down
I don't know what to expect
Tool begins The Grudge

I am overwhelmed
My senses are bombarded
I feel a new urge

Suddenly I dance
Never liked dancing before
I have two left feet

It doesn't matter
I exist in my own world
Tool amazes me

I laugh and I cry,
I live Life and die; but I,
All the while, am still.

Feeling eternal
All the pain, separation -
I am not alone.

In slumber, in sleep,
The river carries my raft,
Watch the weather change.

That's it for now. btw, the one's I read were absolutely incredible. Very glad I found this corner of cyber space.

My response to paper head can only be summed up in a haiku.

A head of paper
Doesn't hold much, or does it?
An empty vessel.

To answer your question, because you can say a lot without using a ton of words. Your haiku is yours and I hope you like it.

I want to believe
Tolerate lies, cheats and thieves
No one's innocent

Do unto others
Find some kind of sanity
You look so precious

I want what I want
Have another drink my friend
Trust me, the liar

Change this way of life
Slip it deeper inside us
Relax. Take my hand.

Would you die for me?
So much of nothing to say
Don't you fucking lie.

You think I've sold out?
I've got some advice for you
Shove it up your ass.

I have to admit
Even haikus about Tool
Bring thoughts of fourth grade

Traumatizing thoughts
That I'd much rather supress
Or I'll start weeping

Will they ever die?
Don't want to think about it.
One more album, please.

To listen to Tool,
To open your mind, you must
Swing on a Spiral

Fuck all you posers.
Why can't you just be yourself.
Don't be such a Tool.
