Hope this post leads to more thoughts on the rest of the album. All of the songs on this album reside on a similar vein. :)

Unable to forgive your scarlet lettermen.
**A letterman is a student who has earned a letter in a particular activity. Unable to forgive these little moments in time where you might have done something you’re ashamed of or regret. However, what you must come to understand is that these “sins” or whatever you wish to call them are/were a part of you and your life. In the book, the scarlet letter, they give her a chance to remove her letter. She chooses not to. By doing this, she would be admitting that they have won, she should be ashamed, and this is something she needs to escape. To pretend that this part of your life never happened would be denying a part of yourself or a part of your evolution into a better human being. This lyric kind of produces a funny image. All these young strapping (and completely oblivious) college men going out and winning one for the Satan team! Anyway, basically, all those men who earned their letters, are a part of you and you have to learn to forgive yourself and move on.

Saturn, considered a karmic planet, takes an average thirty years to transit the zodiac. So, when Saturn comes back around, you better have learned your lessons or you will just have to keep trying (not progressing). Choose one or ten. Is this a beginning to something greater? Or is this an end? You choose.

**The one, the ten. It is a beginning and an end. It’s both. If you want it/are open to it. This can be taken positively or negatively. It can be a beginning to something greater and an end to all you’ve gone through to get to this point. Or it can be the cycle beginning again and your chances for this Saturn cycle are over, doomed to repeat because you haven’t learned. Ignorant to all the damage this is doing to yourself, your life, and the people around you (if there is anyone left). Either way, it conveys the same message.

**The song is almost imploring you.
This can be taken on a personal or relationship level. It is actually, consequentially, both given the right circumstance. If you are in a relationship (a good, connected one), then whatever you experience or change, will affect the other person. Hopefully, this change will be in a good direction for all parties involved. Funny, Saturn takes thirty years to transit and a certain someone was in his (early?) thirties when this was written. (or is it funny?)
P.S. Lateralus – Vastus Lateralus (I’ve seen it spelled Lateralis as well) – It’s your outer thigh muscle necessary for walking where it’s primary function is balance and support. Also, Lateral – Of, or constituting a change within an organization to a position at a similar level. (Lateral – us. Let us become lateral). Lateral thinking. They all mean the same thing.
