View Full Version : Sound at the beginning...

It sounds to me that the first 5 seconds or so of the song with the strange sounds sounds sort of like prison sex. You may want to listen to prison sex first and then list to stinkfist. If this was intentional, what was the meaning behind it? Let me know if you hear it too.

I always thought it was a crank for a music box or jack in the box. makes sense to me.

i heard from my friend who plays the guitar that the sound is harmonics on the guitar, and from what i've heard on the guitar it's probably true. as for it's connection with prison sex i have no idea...

adam's very good at making very bizarre sounds with guitar [prison sex, intolerance]. it's def guitar.

Methinks it's actually danny at the beginning and adam comes in at the end of the intro. I could be wrong, but when the play it live, from what I've seen, after the new breakdown/solo, it's danny that makes the noise right before the "I'll keep digging" part. He does it in all the concert vids I've seen and did it when I've seen them live. Maybe he's just playing a sample from his synth, but it looks as though he's actually making the noise with his sticks and probably one of simmons

Oh, if the question was what was actually making the sounds I would say it was Danny using samples of some sort. But if you are asking what it represents I still say the jack-in-the-box crank or music box crank.

my friend who has seen them told me it is danny playing on a synthesizer and synth. pad

Wondering

Whatever it is, it has haunted me ever since i heard it for the first time. What a wonderful way to begin an album. I think ALL of Tool's albums begin well.

If you've noticed, in the newer version of the song that they play live (the one where they jam a little before the "i'll keep digging..." part), right before they slam into the aformentioned part, danny plays that little intro thing on his simmons pads. So there you have it; the sound was obviously sampled and put into Danny's drum brain for later use; much like the little noises in the softer part on "Schism."

So is the question what is making the sound or what it represents? I would think the representational issue would be more relevant and important.

If you read Guitar World frequently, they tabbed it out a few years ago, around the time Aenima came out.

They have it as a guitar part, with massive EQ and distortion and whatnot. So maybe Adam played it in the studio, but they sampled it for Danny just to make it easier. Who knows, really. Oh yeah, there's infinite delay, harmonics, and maybe a whammy bar used too. That's all according to this Guitar World tab.

BTW, don't trust the rest of the GW tab. It's wrong.

its guitar harmonics (most likely artificial harmonics)....

The sound is tap harmonics under guitar effects. The effect is a ring modulator and compression and delay, a somewhat rare guitar effect these days. I've played the effect myself live, but it's extremely difficult to get the right eq settings, thats is why Adam just samples it live.

The beginning of Prison Sex is the sound you would hear
in the water surrounding a large ship, as the hull flexes
and creaks. I don't think there is any connection.

there very well could be a connection, because if you think about it, it would fit the whole water theme that the album seems to have. im not saying your deffinatly right, but it is possible

I'm pretty sure i know what this sound is. It is a distorted tabla. (traditional indian percussion instrument) a drum geek is me

in relation to the sounds at the beginning of prison sex. It sounds like either justin or adam is grinding something along the strings, there may be some distortion or something i dunno, but it sounds like some grinding. I could be wrong. oh well.

I thought the sounds from Prison Sex were a guitar with the strings loose.... then right at the end he lets go of the... whatever it's called, and the strings tighten up and the sound goes up... I read this SOMEwhere... >_<;;

"F11. That's a neat sound at the start of "Prison Sex." How can I do that?
Tune your low E string down to B, then hold down the tremolo bar so that the string is loose. If you strike it, it should sound like its just flopping there. The next thing you need to do is run your pick over the string to get that scratching sound (you should still be holding the tremolo down). Finally, hit the string one final time and slowly release the tremolo bar (if you do it right, it should sound like it is speeding up). A delay pedal may help as well. "
Taa-daa! Hum.

Adam probably created this sound in the studio and programmed it into danny's kit because it would such a pain to recreate live. Like someone said, he created the sound with a whole lot of distortion and EQ tricks; a lot of compression and maybe even some synthesizer tricks. As far as guitar work, I believe he's sliding from the 1 to the 2 on the low D while two finger tapping on the 21st fret, etc, etc. He was probably all hopped-up on drugs or something.

if you pluck a taught rubberband it seem to have that same sort of ring quality to it. This is just what I thought it sounded like. Although I'm it's probably not, it sounds like it.

the tabla thought is clever. However, I too think
it is Adam playing through a very filtered ring modulator.
However, it is very easily played on drums. (without
sampling) You can hit a drum and press your finger
into the head, bringing the pitch up. Since Danny has
said he tunes his drums to D, A, F, this is possible. I have
a live recording of stinkfist and it sounds like he uses a high
tom tom. Thats what I do when I practice to it anyway..

I think that it is Danny on his Roland Trigger Pad

Danny,it is so obvious,he is hitting pads that make the notes have a bouncing sound effect.Right before the guitar starts to feed back, you can hear Danny stop hitting the pads and start hitting another part of his drum set-up.Like a wooden piece or cow bell.

The beginning of Stinkfist is a steel-drum from Danny Carrey and the beginning of Prison Sex is Adam Jones fuckin' around with his guitar. Notice Danny with the steel-drum how quickly he does it has the guitar is just about to come in.

Actually, that sound at the beginning of the song on guitar isn't that hard to do.

The sound is definatly a guitar!!. he is tapping and sliding as someone suggested. I am pretty sure he did it on th guitar at the birmingham show i saw..right in the middle of the song. Prison sex is done with a floyd rose tremelo or one that can divebomb. it is a pick scrape and picking of the "divebomebed" loose strings, really easy to recreate

I heard a live remix of Stinkfist where Danny plays those samples in the middle of the song. Obviously it wasnt Adam at the time, but it could have been sampled in Danny's Simmons earlier and he just triggered it when he needed to.

Yes, I'm going to have to agree with this. I'll bet it is just a triggered sound effect.

It was definatly not the same sequence as the deginning of the album. What exactly are "simmons" Is is just a type of sampler? are those the polygonal drum lookin things with the magik symbols? If not then what are those too.

The rattling of the strings is probably the 6th string loosened down to an A or F with pick scrapes, high levels of delay and Adam just tunes it up to B before the picking begins.

As for Stinkfist. Maybe it's both. If anyone tabbed or has a decent replica of the intro. than post it. Please. Thank you. zzzz...
