I cannot know the mind of the artists, of course. But driving to and from the hospital this past week, having just become a father and witnessed my wife's labour, listening to Ænima in the car ... well, it was unmistakable. Pushit is a song about labour and delivery, told from the perspective of both mother and child.
At least, now it is for me.
It's funny how a song that I've heard thousands of times over so many years can suddenly take on a meaning so distinct (and yet somehow synchronous) with what it meant to me before. They say having a child can make you young again, can help you regain the beginner's mind. I suppose this is an instance of that wonderful phenomenon. My first. Thanks, Tool.
