If you've ever experienced a DMT trip you can like the experience to the Layered artwork contained in Lateralus.
I guess it is a little hard to explain where I am coming from if you've never tried it.
Here is an exceprt from DMT The Spirit Molecule describing the "trip."

After viewing that and looking at the layers of the album art I am convinced the album is describing a DMT trip.
The Flaming spiral going from the heart out of the head is the pressure you feel emitating from your chest that fills up your head before you get the "hum."
I can liken having "layers peeled off" to actually turning the pages of the booklet to a trip.
This is all kinda hard to explain but I feel as if it is a solid insight to the creation of Alex Greys work and the direction of the band at the time.
