I am going to get a bass for christmas. I haven't played before, so I don't know what equipment to get with the bass either. Can someone help me with info on basses and amps or whatever? I am going to play tool, deftones, you know, rock. Price range is around $300, but I can add around $100 of my own money. Thanks guys.

If you're a total n00b, you might want to get one of those Squire or Ibanez package deals that have a cheap bass, tiny amp, etc.
You might like something from this page. (http://www.musiciansfriend.com/srs7/sid=031024125425064072034063013910/g=bass/search/c=6318)

Yeah, I am a total newb when it comes to basses. I don't want a real shitty bass that won't halp me at all, but I dont want to spend too much.

Cheap isn't necessarily synonomous with shitty. You can get good, cheap basses. Look around in music stores and play on different ones. Find out what kind of neck you like, and so on.

Get a Cort Curbow. Extremely cheap and very, very good. Bartaloni pickups, good quality stuff.

I think a Kramer is a great bass for a beginner.

www.musicyo.com has a good selection of Kramers, and most are within your price range.

When you're first starting out, I would get a bottom of the line amp. You can find cheap practice amps ($40-70) at any local music shop. Don't spend money on a good amp until you need it.
