I can't wait!!! I went to Metallica, and the accoustics weren't the best, but they weren't horrible. It just echoes a lot. The E-Center is definitely the better venue, though. Is there going to be an opening band, does anybody know?

so you have seen bands play at the energy solutions? i was almost sick when they said they were going to play there just cuz i heard that it had awful acoustics there. but then i was just so happy that they are coming to salt lake on this short tour.

I didn't think it was as bad as everyone makes it out to be. I think people over-exaggerate how bad it is. Don't get me wrong, it's not the greatest place in the world to hold a concert, but it isn't horrible. According to my brother-in-law, it's not nearly as bad as it was about 10 years ago. For the most part, they fixed much of the acoustic problems by better balancing the sound to all parts of the arena, and by better insulating the roof. One advantage is that when ESA is fully packed (like this show (close to sold out)), it gets LOUD!!! Band, crowd, and all. This will be my third Tool show, and one thing I've realized from my last two, is that there is no such thing as a bad Tool concert. If I had to give the EnergySolutions Arena a rating for sound, I'd have to give it a 6/10. The E-Center is more along the lines of 8.5/10. Go to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yKAWohyb2xI. It's a clip from the Metallica show. It should KIND OF give you a taste of what it's like. But it's only cell phone quality. It is better in person.

I have only seen Tool at one other arena and thats here in Idaho at the Idaho Center. The acoustics were amazing both times I saw them there. I cant see how a more expensive arena could sound worse. Im hoping that the acoustics at least meet the Idaho Centers since Im traveling from Boiset to see them in SLC. Even if the acoustics arent the greatest, it wont matter.... ITS TOOL!!!

I saw Pearl Jam at the Idaho Center in 2000 or 2001; it sounded much better than concerts at ESA, I'm afraid. It's not about the expense of the arena, but the purpose of the design. The Idaho Center is comparable to Utah's E-Center, which was designed as a multi-function, midsized arena. It was specifically contemplated that concerts would be held there, and there are multiple concert arrangements engineered into the building. While not a great arena, the E-Center (and comparably, the Idaho Center) is decent enough for bigger shows ("bigger" on a Utah scale).

The ESA is a sports arena built for basketball and monster truck pulls. I've bitched about it before, I know, but what makes the ESA one of the noisiest arenas in professional basketball is what makes it so lousy for concerts. The volume of the music, coupled with the volume of the crowd, resonate and reverberate forever. After a few minutes, there's a thick, muddy wall of sonic noise through which the music has to travel.

It is a horrible venue for music. I'll be there, of course, but why this concert wasn't booked at USANA Amphitheater, I'll never know.

But does anybody know who is opening for Tool? There are many rumors, so I don't take them to heart, but I heard one is King Crimson is doing all the west coast stops... If King Crimson opened, it may just be the best concert in history... It's a nice thought.

Yeah, it's a bummer they're playing ESA, but it still kicks all kinds of ass that on a limited tour with as few dates as this one, that SLC gets a show at all.

So really, I ain't bitching.

Agreed. No, actually I just felt the 10k costume was silly and lazy. Leather's not all that more time-consuming but it's from the Lateralus era and looked bad-ass on that tour. It gives me hope.

Plus, he's suppose to "change" for each tour, so it feels like he still gives a little bit of a crap.

Don't know if anyone knows or not, but if there is ONE brightspot out of this ripoff summer tour, it is the fact that RS's lyrics were changed up last night in Denver. I could definitely tell he was singing different lyrics, but seeing as how fast RS is, I had no clue what they were (and I don't have the best ear, especially on things I've never heard :( ). Anyways, some of the people who posted reviews of last nights show said he was singing something about Michael Jackson in there. Just thought it'd be interesting to know. But I am no way using that to justify the same setlist thing, which is simply goddamn lazy and inexcusable.

After Flood should be the "set break" then Lateralus, Vicarious, Ćnema. I think they'll fill the time with extended Lateralus and an uber long intro to Vicarious.

That would really suck.

987 is what Lateralus was originally going to be called because it's time signature changes from 9 to 8 to 7.

Sonny was jokingly going to duel with Tool Aenema for a comment he made...not a Tool reference.

Maybe. But Maynard also once said he saw the members of this band making music as long as they were able. I think he still believes that. But things change and people change. And being a star affects people in different ways.

Only thing that worries me is that he can never keep is story straight. A few months before he said that quote he said the end of tool would be "sooner rather than later."

He also said they only add the lyrics in for the "kids that eat at mcdonalds" a few months later he stated that he always felt the most important part of any album was "the lyrics and the story."
So, either the man eat's mcdonalds all the time or he's nuts...

When they call it the "10,000 Days" or "Lateralus" tour, it usually means they are touring to support sales for that album. which was fairly recently released. Let's see here... uhhh, 10,000 Days was released THREE years ago. I don't think they're touring to support that album anymore. I'd think this tour was more of a "whatever" tour. Again to clarify for you, I will go see them at Lolla, because I love this band and if I thought for a sec mjk was still in to it at all I would just shut up. But he's not anymore. Tickets were purchased quite awhile ago. They're still Tool, I think the majority of fans will still attend because they enjoy the music so much, but it's still very disappointing to see the way things are panning out. I do not think there is anything wrong with all of us being disappointed. What you said is like me saying, if you love 8 song re-hashed set lists so much, then go to every show.

some bands do it. tool did it once before between opiate and aenima. they went on a hiatus after the opiate, came back for a short tour, released an album shortly thereafter.

actually, come to think of it, their coachella '99 was also between albums.

point is bands do it. go check out their "tour poster" for this tour. same 10k days/vacarious look.

NIN did it before too (at some point between downward spiral and fragile).

just think of it as b-side ;).

But there is no legal problems this time. And things were different back in the opiate days, they didn't have a list of over 60 songs they could be playing while still only playing the same 8.

You obviously don't know what it's like to have a certain group of songs that you would prefer to play live over all others.

Look, I am just perplexed. If mjk want's to come out and say "look I can only sing these songs." I could begin to get over the fact that I was born too late. But when Flood and Pushit are thrown in at random times it gives people hope that a Parabola or H. could be busted out.

Let me be clearer: you seem to have no idea what it's like to play live music.

some nights you want to play songs you didn't feel like the night before. Some songs you're entirely sick of and will not play under any circumstances.

You're coming off as a spoiled child trying to tell the band their business, as if they owe you something.

Not saying they owe me a thing. I am saying I wish I had been able to attend the Lateralus shows. Did I at any point blame them for my not being able to?

And also, it's kinda hard for me to believe that a band would rather play the same thing every night without getting bored. I mean they look bored for crying out loud.

Since neither you, or I, have even been on a tour as excessive as this band it's ignorant for both of us to assume we know anything as a fact.

This seems to support more the opposite side of the argument that you are on, unless you are suggesting that they do not want to play any of their other 52 songs under any circumstances while they feel an overwhelming urge to whip out Stinkfist on a whim for every show over the past 10 or 15 years...???

What a crock. I played many years as a professional musician. Of course it matters what your fans think. At least to a certain extent. Tool are at a level they can afford to cater to their own desires though so I am not comparing myself to them. But this is all Maynard's call. The entire set list is Maynard's call. Stop pointing the finger at a simple fan who clearly loves this band every bit as much as you like it's somehow a bad thing they want to hear a little variety in the set list.

Look, I can get with that. But if you go back and read all of his posts, it's pretty clear he is a fan. If he's disappointed with the set list and has a good reason for it, then we should be ok with that opinion.

I personally will be at two shows shortly and apparently I'll get the exact set list we got these last two nights. And I won't complain. But internally do I wish they might consider a few other songs be added? You bet. And I'd like to think I've earned enough credit around here to not be thought of as "whiny" just because of it. Well, perhaps I am a bad writer. I'd have a hard time turning down a tool show as well. At times I think about not going beacuse it is a lot of money for something I have already seen, but again Tool is a little more to me than just a "band".

Guy's up there performing, what more do you want? If he had no commitment whatsoever he wouldn't have come back for the tour.

Let's not kid ourselves, they're so far beyond needing money after two overpriced tours and merchandise sales that would put Gene Simmons to shame over the course of 15 years, the argument that "they're doing it just for the money" is null. I'm pretty sure they're set.

Believe me when I say I don't think AJ, JC OR DC would ever do it for the money. But mjk might have a few more reason to. Again, I assume he's likely there for more reasons than just money, but someone did say that during an interview he seemed a little puzzled on why they were touring again.

He just makes me nervous is all, he doesn't appear (mentally) to be the same man he was in 2001/02. But I guess who is?

i'm waiting... patiently... for my show on the 25th. The venue should be great (Nokia in Grand Prarie), and hopefully there will be some distance between these setlists and what I will see...
...just a note, we all have a right to be upset that the setlist is almost identical to what wrapped up the '07 tour, yes. but we should also note that we're lucky to get anytihing at all. getting to see this band at all is a wonderful experience, and a privelidge. imagine being some 15-20 year old and this being one of the first concerts you've ever seen... it may be disappointing to all of us who have been rather devoted to this band for quite some time, but for some, it could be a life changing experience.

"repugnant is the creature who would squander the ability to lift an eye to heaven conscious of his fleeting time here..." or said another way... be grateful for what you've got.

...THAT being said... I'll be heartbroken to some extint if I see this exact same setllist on the 25th.

...it kind of makes me wish that I had not "spoiled my surprise" and read these threads...

a couple of other things to note, then it's off to dream-land for this man.

- on the last tour, the first couple of dates were shorter setlists before they started stratching their legs a bit...
- this is still a 10K days tour. in fact, don't be surprised if a video single for one of the songs off of 10K days comes out during the tour... similar to the Schism and Parabol/Parabola singles... there was a small tour, I believe, that was in support of those as well...

ok.
