View Full Version : TOOL vs Dream Theater

Ok, I am a Third Eye TOOL Fan, nevertheless, I have been introduced to Dream Theater in recent months, and I've come to the conclusion that there are many similarities.

For instance.

46 n 2, Tool; compared to The Great Debate, Dream Theater.

Danny Carey's Style; compared to The Dance of Eternity, Dream Theater.

Nothing against TOOL, but I beLIEve that Dream Theater had to be an inspiration to TOOL. I've seen nothing about it on any site or article.

How Many Agree?

That link didn't really help.

Um, i listened to both, and i don't really think there's any link.
The drumming is not that similar (Dance of eternity only sounds like Tool because of all the Time sig changes)

The Guitarists, well Petrucci has had a huge influence on me as a guitar player, but i still can't come up with a riff that sounds like him. Adam seems to be just doing his own thing. Bass wise, i can't really tell, can't help there either.

Tool has already listed King Crimson and Rush as influences, and Dream Theatre probably has been influenced by them too. Maybe thats the link?

Appreciate your opinion, still; and I’m no guitarist or drummer, I just appreciate talented music, but I have to disagree.

Danny loves hitting those off beat rhythms, especially with those Mandala pads. Tool’s and Dream Theater’s randomness with their tones and notes, the lengthy songs, and their subject matters; I’m not saying anyone is copying anyone, I simply believe that Tool and DT are very similar and must be on the same wavelength.

Lester’s link helped me, Thanks man,

It showed me that I’m not the only one; I’m glad that someone else asked the same question.

Thanks you guys.

Keep rockin and Spiral Out.

They said this about Isis and Tool as well, and i don't really see the similarity.

However, i gave a listen to The Great Debate and I admit it does sound way similiar. Scary.

portnoy actually said that TGD is a song they composed after listening to aenima. its basically what DT does since theyre so creatively bankrupt...

Peanut's Parents
02-20-2009, 07:02 PM
Actually The Album was composed with these inspirations.

"Influences for the album's writing and recording include Metallica's Master of Puppets, Tool's Ænima, Radiohead's The Bends (and also a Radiohead bootleg Mike brought in)"

So basically, this is the answer to my question.

Thx guys.

edit: i like the great debate. portnoy's drum work on that song is as tight as a nun's asshole. and the lyrics are pretty damn cool, too. Still, you can feel their lurking christianity at parts haha

funny, i have the same thoughts about you and RIvek boy over there... though at least Rivek hasnt been consistently dysfunctional since 2003.

but anyhoo, to stay on topic: Not many similarities can be drawn between Tool and DT, imo. Actually, when I listen to "tool radio" on my last.fm, i have no idea why DT shows up so frequently. To me theyre really nothing alike. The only reason comparisons can be drawn between 46&2 and Home, or between AEnima and TGD is because DT thrives on borrowing musical artistry from other bands.

Anyone ever hear DT's take on Muse?

crincled
02-26-2009, 12:59 AM
Ultimately I don't even see similarities in those songs beyond the superficial. The main thing that even makes them close to similar is that they're both prog groups, but then progressive is such a wide label that it means about next to jack shit.

I think it's just the fact that they occupy the headspace of weird time sigs and angular guitar riffs and people who are inexperienced with analysis of what they're listening to draw undue parallels.

Besides, Petrucci's a better guitarist than Adam in every way, any day of the week.

For sure - just to compare them is almost ludicrous... yet i remember seeing Petrucci alongside Vai and Satriani in G3 and it was painfully obvious how he was the noob in that group...

I like Petrucci, though. He's fast, and he's DT's best (if only) songwriter. With Portnoy writing songs, you never know what you're gonna get. For example, Home is fucking amazing, but The Glass Prison is fucking horrible.

^for realzDespite the obvious gap in technical skill between Petrucci and the other G3ers, I still prefer him over the other two. He's got a slight edge over Satch (and a massive one over vai) in his arrangements and his more emotional / melodic phrasing and guitar lines. Satch makes me feel something, but Petrucci makes me live it.

really? i just felt he was the most uninspired of the three.... trying to make it up with quickness alone...

Yeah, if you tune it, add dual exhaust, and add either a fuel injection system or a turbo and you were racing a weak stock V8.

You can get much more power out of a V8 than you can a V6 anyday.

You must not know much about cars.

For starters, it's a little 100lb Hyundai...lol

It's highly unlikely that your mom's 4cyl is faster than the 350 V8, only possibly at an initial acceleration from a complete stop would it possibly take off a bit faster. I guarantee the top speed of the truck is higher than the Hyundai. This is due to two things A) the obvious weight difference between the two vehicles and B) the trucks engine is geared towards having more power in torque, not horsepower. It's meant to be able to pull heavy loads, not win races.

the only way this is true is if the truck's body is made out of fucking lead.

Or... just a thought... do the people who drive the truck in your family realize they have to shift out of first gear?

you both are dumb.

the trucks an automatic, no shifting involved, wiseass. and yes, it basically is made out of lead. its a gmc sierra 4x4 extended cab. not to mention its a 2500 series, therefore has the extra weight from the 3/4 ton components. not to mention it has really low gearing because its set up to hual. the thing tops out just over 100(and no it doesnt shut off...it runs out of gear)

the hyundai is basically made out of plastic, i could probably pick the fucking thing up. its got just a 2.0L, but is geared pretty high and due to its light weight...the things fucking cranks. ive had it up around 115, and it had plenty left...

Yeah, like I said. The only way a hyundai 4-cylinder could outrun a v8 is if the v8 is made out of lead (or equivalent in this case).

it is a 3/4 ton heavyass sierra. it is built with power and durability, to go slow and hual shit. sure, it has a much more powerful engine, but its chassis aint built for speed.

Master_Of_Nothing
03-15-2009, 01:52 AM
power isnt directly related to speed i think..

Anyway, i noticed on Forza (no flame ok?) that less powerful cars did way better on tracks than more powerful cars... So power does not equal faster track time at all.

because as we all know videogames are a perfect model of real life.

So on GTA4 you can kill cops and then dial a number on your cell phone for an instant pardon. therefore you can do that in real life for fun and no consequence.

lol, of course if you die, you could always pause the game then hit up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, A, B, B, A, select then start.

The difference between Forza and games like GTA and even Need For Speed, is that Forza is a realistic driving simulator, Whereas GTA just stretches reality.

I never said that the games are realistic, i merely meant that Forza takes into account factors such as tire wear, damage to engine etc, in other words, uses real life as a basis for the performance of cars, whereas GTA uses a less truthful model to allow cars to perform as needed for the game.

Some videogames such as Halo2 , use a engine (forget the correct term) to reproduce earth effects such as gravity, ballistics (friction), as realistically as possible.

Nazi Zombie mode was unlockable upon completion of campaign mode, but Treyarch recently made it available to everyone on Xbox Live. There's only one map right now for the game mode, but Thursday I believe is the release of a second--as well as some regular online multiplayer maps. I'm really digging World at War despite it being a WW2 rehash.

But yes, Modern Warfare 2 makes me salivate a little. Definitely looking forward to that one.

COD World at War, you mean. 4 has a noticeable absence of Nazi zombies.

Yes. W @ War. I don't know, really. Just felt like shooting some zombies today. Nazi zombies.

Nazi Zombie mode was unlockable upon completion of campaign mode, but Treyarch recently made it available to everyone on Xbox Live. X Box, sure...

Last week I listened to the little guy at school (whose home blew up at X-Mas when his mommy lit a cigarette whilst sucking oxygen from a tank) talk to me about killing zombies. I didn't question it because he seemed content.

But now I have a itchey trigger finger for virtual mayhem.

I don't recall seeing zombies in ANY COD game.

On a side note, I can't wait for COD: Modern Warfare 2 to come out. Hopefully they'll add the co-op feature they had for COD 5.

it was second-hand unsubstantiated info told to me quickly to get out of doing math sheets

Oh, that zombie thing is probably only on the console versions. I only play FPS on PC's. It's so much better.

FPS's are always better, still, on PCs, but the gap is narrowing. Bioshock was built from the ground up for consoles and right now no game is giving me a harder nerdrection than Bioshock 2, after reading up on some new info about it.

I get to play as a Big Daddy I get to play as a Big Daddy I get to play as a Big Daddy

lol, I just started playing the first one recently here and there when I have free time.

Anyways, as far as PC vs console...I just can't stand the console controllers for FPS games. It's just so much more practial with a mouse and keyboard...at least to me.

I got to do that in the first bioshock.

But yeah, that game is epic. Its by far my favorite game.

bioshock does sound excellent...

James Labrie, I knew I'd heard that name before, and not w/ DT. James also sings on this CD I have called The Explorers Club 'Age of Impact' on Magna Carta out of Texas. EC has a new CD out called Mammoth. I like the band. Good prog-rock.

For anyone to say all of muse's songs sound the same, then you really havent listened to them. I used to be a hater but if you listen to the album Origin of Symetry, its one of the most complete albums you will hear. Notable muse songs that show diversity are citizen erased, new born, stockholm syndrome, map of your head, space dementia, micro cuts and in your world. btw to say tool's taken from DT is idiotic considering tool has released one album since the DT songs you mentioned. Besides that one similarity due to time sigs that tool influenced on DT, Danny's drumming blows protnoy out of the water and i will say guitarist in generes have a similar sound.

Peanut's Parents
03-26-2009, 04:44 PM
first, what the hell is generes?

second, adam jones can't even touch john petrucci, on any level

third, it doesn't really matter what muse songs sound like because half their music is good and the other half is beyond vapid

fourth, lol, noob

The proof is your entire post history.

First thing a man should do on TDN:
Forget about trying to challenge Rivek's post count.

Adam is a nice guy anyway, as he is conscious of his guitar playing level and he admits he is not a guitar god.
Intersting that even Danny once said that he was afraid and stressed when he heard that Aloke Dutta is listening to him on Lateralus tour.
Cool, true guys, they never make themselves out :)
Perhaps Maynard does, sometimes... :>
I wonder why tere's so little talk about Justin. He is good. But where are tons of Justin interviews, Justin whining-about, Justin cult etc? Or is it a role of a bassist in the band?
Is it because he prefers just to enjoy playing than to throw words and plectrums at fans :)

Master_Of_Nothing
03-27-2009, 08:22 PM
the Role of the bassist is to be in everybody elses shadow. period.
Might not like it, but that's life...

Adam on a good day could out 'emote' John petrucci on a bad day.
Dream Theater solos and moods arent really that emotive.

Master_Of_Nothing
03-28-2009, 12:56 PM
Hey i KNOW ITPOEpt1. Hell, i learnt the solo, i liked it that much. but thats Petrucci on a good day. Most of the time its just mindless riffage.

Anyway, Through her eyes has a way better solo, and the solo in The spirit carries on has got to THE best solo ive ever heard

Master_Of_Nothing
03-28-2009, 02:38 PM
Haha proof or it didnt happen lol ;) I listened to Systematic Chaos for ages before that alleged post, and i know its a really nice album, less heavy metal, which suits me alright.
I would kill to play ITPOE 1 and 2 perfectly, or even Ministry of lost souls.
Currently im stuck on Home's solos, tricky work there

Master_Of_Nothing
03-28-2009, 06:02 PM
The outro solo was easy enough, intro riff/solo good.
i'll crack it eventually, but it'll take while before i get it live worthy haha, so stick with other songs. Halo by Machine head is my best song right now
