I agree. Although every Tool album 'has bass', this one deffinately seems a little different. As you put it, "lives in the low end". I love it.

This album has a completely different atmosphere to it with a subwoofer. Especially Wings/10,000 days. I recommend getting that sub. :)

I bought one in April in anticipation of the 5/2 release. I am soooo glad I did. The wife wasn't real happy, but she knew for TOOL it would be essential. Go get yourself one, Master. You'll like 10K Days even more.

I still think tool wouldnt be waht they today without justin chancellor. Every member of this band is just as crucial as the next but justin really gave tool that extra oomph, IMO

i agree..JC kicked the living hell out of the bass on 10,000 days
his work is really moving, i dont know how he does it but he creates
something truly original, nothing i have surely heard before. kudos to him
he really grew up in tool, can you imagine being given a chance to be in
one of the greatest bands ever at 24. or even starting a band like tool...insane

Has Anyone ever read Ralph Ellison's Invisible Man? Its closing line is "Who knows but that, on the lower frequencies, I speak for you?" has alot of ressonance with the overarching themes and ideas in 10,000 days. If you have read the book, then you know what I'm saying.
I'm not trying to fire-up any conspiracy/puzzle/"Maynard must have read this book" threads; I'm just saying that its an interesting connection.

If you do it on a simple style EQ, yes you're right. On my shelf system, and it's a GOOD shelf system mind you, this album sounds awful when I turn up the bass too much. But it's only got bass, treble, midrange settings.
But if you happen to have a system that has a 12-band EQ, like the one I have in my living room, you can adjust it properly across the different frequencies to pump up the bass without mudding up the rest of the sounds.
I'm glad I waited a year so I could afford the good stuff =). Be patient....

If you have a good set of headphones, just crank up the bass while turning down the volume a little. Your ears will adjust to the new volume level, and you won't get the distortion.

Well, I never use the EQ in itunes, but on my home system, here's something similar to how I have it set.
On a better system, the adjustments are more subtle. Speaker capability has a lot to do with it, too. Every system is different, so these might not sound that great. You just gotta use your ear. But try these.
Set 32Hz to between +6 and +9 db.
Set 64Hz to +3 db
Set 125Hz to 0
Set 250Hz to between +1 and +3
Set 500Hz to +3
Set 1KHz to between -1 and -3
Set 2Khz to 0
Set 4Khz to +3
Set 8KHz to between +1 and +3
Set 16KHz to +6
This may or may not help that much depending on your system, but it definitely brings the bass out without losing the clarity in the mids or highs.

The bass on Intension is ridiculous. That shit will rattle your rib-cage if you've got yourself a decent set-up.
There's also a nice sub-woofer effect on the second "strapped down to my bed..." sequence in Rosetta Stoned.

The Lustmord remixes work better than anything on 10000 Days, in terms of bass.

Yeah, I mostly listen to this album through decent headhpones on our home setup with a good EQ. The bass on this album is deep, and it adds a sort of line throughout the songs. What I like about it is that is very clear, yet it doesn't go all 'muddy' over the rest of the music. know what I mean?

Hah, I ended up turning the bass button off on my cd player for Lateralus and 10,000 Days recently so that I could hear the guitar more cleanly. :D
...but I have to add that Jambi with the bass turned up sounds amazingly heavy. I think I'll crack another lager open and go listen to that right now anyway. Gah, I just know I'll need to print the tabs off and try playing some of it now aswell. (why am I moaning about this? Maybe I should punch myself in the face and just get on with it.)

Sorry to hijack the thread, but i wanted to know if you guys culd help me out with my EQ settings for WMP 10. I'm not much of an audiophile and i'm stuck with a passably decent pair of headphones, i'm kinda broke right now so can't upgrade for a while.
I just wanted to know what sort of EQ settings you guys use or would recommend. Plus the Bass Boost and WOW settings.
Cheers.

On a better system, the adjustments are more subtle. Speaker capability has a lot to do with it, too. Every system is different, so these might not sound that great. You just gotta use your ear. But try these.
Set 32Hz to between +6 and +9 db.
Set 64Hz to +3 db
Set 125Hz to 0
Set 250Hz to between +1 and +3
Set 500Hz to +3
Set 1KHz to between -1 and -3
Set 2Khz to 0
Set 4Khz to +3
Set 8KHz to between +1 and +3
Set 16KHz to +6
This may or may not help that much depending on your system, but it definitely brings the bass out without losing the clarity in the mids or highs.

just did that and will listen to hear the difference :)
