Just as an FYI they scratched out the $120 price on the signed posters and charged $130 for this show.

This show was fucking awesome. I had an awesome view of the stage. Loved the setlist. Hated the beer lines. This is wine country.

Huh. I thought Tuscon had some actual fans, like maybe this site would get some use or something. Guess not.

AMAZING SHOW!

Maynard's voice was holding up pretty well compared to what the reviewers from the other shows had said. He did cut out the "starin' down the hole again, hands are on my back again" part of pushit, but that shit is hard to sing. Im an opera singer and I have difficulty with that so I understand how Maynard who has been screaming for 20 years or so has difficulty with it.

I envy the popcorn salesman who was allowed to go up on stage and give maynard popcorn. Danny, Adam and Justin were really really on tonight. There were a few moments but nothing too crazy.

New visuals were awesome. 2 dude next to me who invaded my space the whole time sucked. They were both trying to groove to the music the way maynard used to back in the 90s. LAMESAUCE!

Lateralus was nuts. My favorite song ever. so glad I went.

POPCORN! hahahaha! Great show! they have the most dynamic stage set ever- i swear it kept moving and changing with every song. AWESOME! They had a new visual where justin and adam created some buzzing and harmonics then set their instruments down... then they had visuals of "the grid"- layered pattens spinning in different directions at different speeds that would line up to create a human figure. Once the human was upright they went into laterals... THIS WAS THE COOLEST SHIT EVER! The sound and melded perfectly with the visuals and i could her the sound of the grid spinning... woh. I could follow the band around just to see this one part again.

PUSHIT! holy smokes!

loved the extras packed into Ænema... the song seemed so much more.

Got a kick watching some guys trying to make it down the stairs, but whatever chemical cocktail they had going on in their head made these stairs very alien to them. one ended up jumping down a flight because he couldn't figure out the stairs.

i was sitting 2nd row center and could totally have dealt with sitting further back a bit but was not disappointed. People were very friendly, and i was so happy to have a space of my own rather than be crammed up against the gate.

Thank you TOOL for another awakening - ill never be the same again

The show could do without the really annoying and very loud sound that was being played during the brief intertmission.

As others have noted, the guys were nails. Don't know if they've been logging extra rehearsal time or what, but they were polished and the mixing (for those who know the Tucson Arena) was pretty stellar considering the venue. Then again, this is Tool we're talking about. There's been too much chatter in recent years about Tool "mailing it in" on tour. Haven't seen them live in almost 9 years, but I call BS on that if last night is any indication.

Set list was as advertised. The drum-off between Dave (or David - Happy B-Day, btw) and Danny was fantastic, and Maynard's hankering for some popcorn provided some good laughs. Hard to cherry-pick favorite moments but if I had to pick, it would be the entire crowd getting jacked up to Stinkfist and hearing Lateralus live again. Whoa. The light show, imagery and, most importantly, the sounds made it a really memorable night all the way around.

VERY grateful the boys decided to visit The Old Pueblo. Goes without saying, but if you can catch them this Winter, do it. They're on their game.

I've actually grown quite fond of that intermission over the years, incredibly psychedelic.

im sorry i invaded your space... i didnt mean to be a bother... i wasnt completely myself that night, neither was my friend. I dont know how maynard used to groove back in the 90's - too busy finding my own groove. Thats how i enjoy their music. Again: Im sorry i got in your way.

i dont know if u noticed but that noise went perfectly with the visual of the the patterns and grids spinning - aligning into the figure of a man... but the sound you heard was what that grid (the collective) sounds like. Well, thats where my altered state of consciousness took me during that time at least. None the less - the way they were using harmonics, reverb, feedback and ghost note frequencies between the two instruments was amazing, i thought. And then being able to animate the visuals to align with the sound just right- MIND BLOWING. I will try and catch them again this tour just to see that intermission again.

REMEMBER- if you think its lame, there's probably something you're missing- this is TOOL

(or maybe i just had a headful and was creating something out of nothing- this IS tool)

4th show for me. I think it sucked. Danny was good but the rest phoned it in. Sounded like a high school cover band- very rough. 46&2 was the only song that sounded polished. What a ripoff.

3rd show for me and being a fan for 20 yrs now i am in aw at what an experience a tool show is. I could go every night and feel like watching for the first time. Push it was a highlight but the best for me was 46 and 2. It is my favorite song and with the new visuals it blew me away. By far the best of the three times i have seen it. I always love lateralus and stinkfist, they never disappoint. I think Adam broke a string at the intro of schism and had to change guitars and maynard seemed to be enjoying himself. For me every chance to see them is a privilege and an honor.

This was my 10th or 11th Tool show. Not a bad show by any means, but overall I'd say this ranks toward the bottom of the Tool concerts i have seen.

The venue was decent, people were generally friendly around us. Unfortunately the guy I was next too screamed most of the lyrics as loud as he possibly could which if you get excited for maybe your favorite song or whatever then fine, but when it goes on all show it really detracts from the experience. He was even screaming out trying to mimic adams guitar solo during jambi.

It was great to see Hooker, and even better to see ticks and leeches, but I'd have to say that Pushit was the performance of the night. Intension stood out to me as being better than I had seen them perform it before. All the other performances were average which by no means is a bad thing, just maybe not as great this time around. Lateralus is always great to see live, and of course Aenema is always a great one to end with. I wouldn't say the guys are phoning it in, maybe they are just getting way too good at making it look too easy.

Do you prefer Dave or David?
Give up the popcorn, mutherfuker!

A nice little happy birthday sing along during Lateralus for Dave.

I noticed the ascending guitar riff by Adam during the second verse of Stinkfist is most likely something we will hear on the new album.

The new song (no vocals) after Pushit is in 7/8 meter. It might be 11/4 but I think 7/8. Justin hits a lot of double-stops up high typical of his style. Adam plays a lot of whole notes througout acting more as the bass and letting Justin take the lead.

This was one of the top 3 performances I have seen from Tool. I have seen them 24xS. Very tight and next to flawless delivery by the band. The venue was awful shit. Maybe the worst I have seen. But damn the visuals and performance during Lateralus were as great as ANY performance the band has turned in. Hard to imagine not everyone would see that. We're all entitled to our own opinions and I know the experience vaires by person and is often based on situation (friends, droogs, seat assignment, etc). But this was truly one of their best performances in the times I have seen them.

Thanks for hosting me.. and Tool, AZ.

This was my fourth Tool concert (my fiance's first!) and we were both blown away. There were some pretty shit people around us but once security got on them/they got too drunk, we were free to focus. :)

All four of the guys were spot on, and that's saying something. Maynard's vocals were near perfect, which shocked the hell out of me because he picked some very, very difficult songs. His isms were funny as hell; it was awesome to see him having fun.

The Instrument Boys were fantastic as well. It seemed like the newly-shorn Justin had some technical difficulties throughout the show. He and Adam had some sort of conference about it (or they just decided to have a talk..who knows? :) ). Aside from a few hiccups, Adam was right on as well. He's always a joy to listen to. Danny was, as always, a beast. I don't think that man has an off switch. His drum duo/off with Dave (or David--who got a happy bday song from MJK!) was incredible. The two of them were definitely having fun.

I was a huge fan of the intermission. I was originally going to sit down for a second but I looked up and tuned in and just couldn't. :) The new little bits and pieces that they played throughout the show were incredible. I can't wait to hear them again.

The highlights (for me) were Hooker, Ticks, Aenima and Lateralus. I have never seen the first two and I'm incredibly happy that I have. Hooker was an incredible way to start the show; it definitely got a response. Ticks was epic. Maynard didn't waver and neither did anyone else. I like Aenima almost every time, but the whole bit about AZs centennial right before was a great lead in. Well done. Lateralus is my favorite to see live and this was no exception.

All in all, the guys killed it. I hope everyone gets a chance to see them on this tour. They won't be sorry.

Tucson, AZ 1/17/12

My brother and I got there just in time for this one, we literally got to our seats just as the opening licks of "Hooker With a Penis" started. My seat was in the third row directly between Danny's two bass drums, absolutely perfect.

Taking everything in, I'm still having trouble registering that they're actually playing "Hooker ith a Penis." I look over at my brother and he's already got his eyes closed rocking out, and realize that we're in for a quite show. The song itself sounded great, it always surprises me how clean they sound live.

Not really much to say about "Jambi." It was bad ass, and Adam nailed his talk box solo.

"Ions" starts up, and my usually somewhat reserved brother looks over and goes, "FUCK YES!" I know "Stinkfist" is played out, but it's probably the "hit" I enjoy most live. Specifically the bridge when everything goes green, and the strobe light goes on. Adam does his tension-filled screeching riff, Danny gets tribal on the toms, Justin does his pulsating bass licks, and all the while Maynard's whispering in the background. That shit's always a mindfuck for me.

Danny starts pummeling the beginning of "Ticks and Leeches," and my jaw hits the floor. Holy shit was this incredible live. That intro was everything we discussed and more. Justin was standing right in front of me when he started chugging the bassline. It's crazy how intense he gets, quite the contrast from Adam. Maynard sounded awesome, just as I suspected he would. Danny mistakenly added an extra fill at one point. I probably wouldn't have noticed if he wasn't directly infront of me. Justin looked back at him, and Danny was just laughing at his fuck up. Also, just sayin'...

After this song, Justin has some trouble with his bass. His tech comes out in a lab coat and they start talking. Maynard, seemingly annoyed leans in and says, "Justin, how long's this going to take?" Justin shrugs. Maynard looks out at the crowd and says, "I see people walking around with bags of popcorn." He turned and walked back and jealously muttered under is his breath, "I fuckin' want one." He then came back around, "GIVE ME A POPCORN, MOTHERFUCKER." A bag flies up on stage as a consession's worker simultaneously walks on stage and gives Maynard an additional bag. Maynard then takes both bags, holds them over his crotch and says, "How ya like me noooow?"

"Pushit" was incredible. Justin flubbed a chord early on, and that was the only other mistake I noticed all night. The guitar tone, and Maynard's voice really stood out in this song. He did leave out the final stanza a la "Vicarious" (which I'm so glad they dropped btw) but all in all it was still great. Two for two hearing this song in Tucson!

Next, Maynard steps down off the stage and the other three slowly work into a new song/jam. It was probably the slowest build up of any sort that I've heard from them, and I can only suspect that it's going to be part of the "epic" song/two part song on the new album. Not going to lie, the sound kind of reminded me of Mogwai.

"Schism" was next with the double-timed bridge. Pretty standard, they made the stage red for it, which I thought worked well.

"Intension" was another favorite of mine. I really enjoyed Justin's trance-inducing bass riff on it. Kind of liquidy.

I was bummed that they didn't go into "Right in Two," but instead started with "46&2." I do think it works much better later in the set rather than right after "Stinkfist." It definitely gives the crowd an energy surge.

"Lateralus" with the drum-off was typical, although it seemed like it was the first time they had done it with this particular drummer, Dave. It was his birthday, and Maynard fucked with him the whole time. He asked if he preferred Dave to David. Then said, "how 'bout Sally?" He gave him one of his bags of popcorn. This poor dude has Adam peering over his shoulder, while trying to sync up with Danny and there's Maynard's hovering over, continuously taunting him. Maynard sang happy birthday to him during the drum off. Toward the end, Maynard enthusiastically pointed out to the crowd getting Dave to look, and when he did, Maynard snatched his bag of popcorn back. Cool new terminator visuals for the drum off as well.

Intermission, I'm not sure if they used this static-frequency sound/song on their last couple of tours but I definitely remember it from the shows at The Pearl. I think this will end up being the last track on the new album a la "Faaip de Oiad," and "Viginti Tres."

Maynard came back out and said, "Dave isn't the only one with a birthday, or birth year. Adam, did you know that Arizona is a 100 years old?" Meanwhile Adam came over and put this little hula figurine on Maynard's keyboard and started doing a little hula dance. He looked like a poor man's Victor Cruz. I don't think he was even listening to Maynard. Maynard raised his bottle of water toward the crowd and said, "Cheers. Here's to the next centennial."

Then he started "The Pot" which I thought was great. Love the accapella intro.

Closed with "Aenima."

All in all it was a top notch show with a top notch setlist. I can't say it was my favorite, because some other shows were more intense for me personally. That said, they're still at the top of their game and sound phenomenal. And again, the setlist really does appeal to both the diehard and casual fans. At this point, it almost seems like they have the mind set of, "what is the last song people would expect us to play?" And then they go play it. I can't get over how good the rarer songs sound, better than ever, basically. It just makes me wish for more deep cuts. It's really impressive how dynamic they are as just a four piece. Some guy walking out summed it up perfectly, "How do four dudes make that much fucking nosie?"

seen tool so many times... off hand i can't remember how many exactly...

but for the record this is the earliest i arrived at a venue to see this band...

it was around 4 that afternoon and there were only about 4 or 5 cars in the parking lot...

went to look for a bathroom... i asked the parking lot lady where there was a bathroom and she just said there was a double door somewhere that was open...

found the service door... went in... ballrooms and halls all around... the place was quiet...

my brother found a sign that said Tool Tour Management... he grabbed that...

as we finished up in the restroom i said to my brother "i don't think we're supposed to be in here... wouldn't it be crazy if we caught the soundcheck?" and just as i finished saying that i heard a very familiar droning sound.... we hung around for a little bit and listened in...

i would go into how the show was... but it's been handled so nicely by other fans... i would just end up repeating what was already said....

All in all... Great show Tool...

flew into phoenix from sac with a couple friends. met up with another friend of mine and rolled out to T (after a quick stop a total wine for some goodies)

showed up way early so took a prime spot and walked to Bario brewing about 1mi away on the railroad tracks. we cabbed it back ;)

had decent seats a few rows behind the mix and agree with pretty much all other reviews (thanks for taking the time to write them btw)

some dude spills his beer all over me which i react by dumping my giant cup of water on him. he apologized, as did I - then said it sucked because he waited forever to get that beer but also that payback was a bitch so we just shook hands and enjoyed a few songs. during intension i slipped out and snagged us each another drink. :)

my drunk as fuck friend was a section over and realized when we got to the car that he left two shirts inside. i made him go back in to get them and when he finally came back with both shirts, he gave me the one he had purchased for someone else :)

great show - good times - loved the desert and went up to Jerome the next day before heading home to sac. definitely enjoyed it - and reno as well. can't wait til next time

you must have been sitting directly behind me. - Row 2 Seat 4... right next to the dude in the tie-dye who had his head down with his hand in the air for the entire show. Sorry if i annoyed the fuck out of you... i had a headfull that night. Great fucking seats though. SO GLAD we didnt have to show up 12 hours early and fight crowds to see it from there. What did you think of that intermission?! OMFG is was tripping balls at that point.

Ahahahahaha, we're you sitting between your girl and your friend? You were right in front of me. Great fucking show, prime time seats. I'm glad you were tripping balls, I would've been if I hadn't taken my lil bro.
